Government, hoping to create a shift in the psyche of Jamaicans from consumption to one of invention and innovation, has devised a formal programme for implementation in schools aimed at boosting student interest in science and technology (S&T).
And a Harvard professor is similarly to devise specialist training for policymakers to help them craft stronger policies to drive the economic shift.
Initially, the Ministry of Commerce, Science and Technology will invest $15 million in the schools programme that will see, among its components, the twinning of school laboratories to companies. Called Science and Technology in Schools (SATIS), the programme will be limited at its outset to secondary level schools, grades 7 to 13. Financing will come from the ministry's Technology Investment Fund.
