name the specs of your dell DUUUDE
cuz all the different types of inspiron i used werent up to par with the no name brand laptop i have now, which cost waaay less.
i personally dont like the deals that Dell have for their lapops, when we think of DELL we think of cheap affordable computer systems. now their laptops never have this quality, although they have like an 899$ one, it is literally a flat box filled with sh**.

Fi real mi fren Vtec_Chump.

I have found that you will pay too much if you just jump on the band wagon. So, do your homework first and shop around, I GUARANTEE YOU WILL FIND better laptops at better prices than Dell.

One strike against them is their 90 days warranty. That is nothing. So more than likely, you will find that the price they quote you on their ads comes standard with that warranty -- that is what I found anyway, before I bougt an Acer.

Next, look at the weight of their cheap laptops... dem tings is like 8-9LBS, every now and then you will find a 6-7LBS one. Well, even there they still linger behind. You can find better options out there my fren, but you have to look.

Dell is not king.

IMHO low-end HPs seem to have better construction that the Dell Inspirons. IBM and Toshiba are good (avoid the low-end Toshibas). The high-end Dells are more like it and Dell seems to have good support and I know persons who are happy with theirs but again: to each his own.

Dude, i got a dell too! I have the Inspiron 2600 1.2 celeron 2 years ago. i got the 3 year extended warranty and the service has been superb. Dell is king on cheap desktops and laptops. if u ever try to customize one they get real expensive. if u want to get a lot of options on a cheap laptop look elsewhere. if u want a cheap laptop with no extras, dell is king. But sometimes dem have some wicked deal. the other day, they took off $750 off any laptop over $1500. i beat myself for a whole 2 days because i could have gotten a wicked system for cheap this one time.

dell is good if u dont add any more features than base. when u start customizing the price sky rockets. i would recommend hp they are way lighter. if i was to buy another laptop(i currently have dell) i would get an hp

I agree with u guys about the IBM and Toshiba they r very good brands. I have worked with a few myself. But do they have a toll free support and excellent customer service I think not.Plus Dell proformance is comparable with any other IBM in its class nowadays. I know!!

Dont u guy see the trend in Jamaica big companies like NCB now use dell over IBM that a major step, its just the plain truth. DELL IS KING IN JA!!!!!

Its because of their marketing ability and support

Chris

Support (and price) is the MAIN reason for large companies (NCB, JPS, UWI, etc.) standardising on Dells. I like their desktops, and high-end (small) notebooks.

I have a Dell Latitude D600. Prior to this, an HP.
Dell really does provide 1) great technical support by phone, 2) a very good warranty, including accidental damage coverage, 3) and local parts and labour via Fujitsu/ICL.

Sure, you can get cheaper machines but if you can get a dell, even second hand that is still under warranty, it's worth it in the long run.

Gillion, I guess for your god -- IBM, he decided that taking care of his people is costing too much, so giving China the option is better.

Dell rocks!, I have a Dell Latitiude D600, Centrino 2.0ghz, 2GB Ram, 100GB Hard drive + plus excellent warranty.

Anyway, we are here to talk about Dell computers. As I was saying my laptop is a Dell Latitude with the following spec:

- Centrino - 2Ghz
- 2GB RAM
- 100GB Hard disk space
- 15.4 Display
- 10/100/1000 Mbps
- Infrared
- Smartcard reader
- SD/MMC / Memory stick reader
- PCCard slot
- CDRW/DVD
- 3.5 Floppy drive
- Svideo Out / Serial / parallel port / Modem port / Mic / Phone jack
- 2 x Batteries @ 3hrs run time
- Docking station with additional ports

Now thats the true specs on my Dell. Any questions?

i didnt even know dell sold 100gb hard disks for laptops. that must be really heavy. and why 2 gig of ram? and only 2ghz processor? u do stuff like graphics? or sumting?

zandex

I am currently using two harddrives, which equals the 100GB. One drive is dedicated to Virtual Server 2005 and the other to the O/S and Apps. I think Dell now has the 80GB, which is the largest drive for their mobile.

VS2005 allows me to create my own test environment for the various products (Windows 2003 and other O/S, SMS 2003, MOM 2005, Exchange, SQL, Linux) that I work with to do my job.

megiddo
December 10, 2004, 12:20 AM
why a server on ur laptop? why not put that on a dektop machine? and once again why 2 gigs of ram?

zandex
December 10, 2004, 05:56 AM
I travel with my laptop to various customers. I do not have a server on my laptop, but instead these servers are running in a Virtual Machine ontop of Windows XP Professional.

With the currently setup of these Virtual Machines (VM), I am now able to run several copies of Windows 2003 Server, Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition with other products installed. These would be SMS 2003, MOM 2005, and ISA 2004. I also demo features like Windows Network Load Balancing, Clustering and security configuration.

At any time I can be running 9 - 10 of these Virtual Machines, which can also be connected to the customer's test or production environment for demostration.

So in the end, I need the Dell laptop (mobility) and the 2GB RAM for the various servers running on the laptop.

This is a prayer...

before i get a dell ...

I will bite my eyeballs out and scrimp and save and buy a SECOND sony vaio.

yes I have one already and it kicks *** even though I partially mash up the screen.

before I lower myself to the level of a common housefly I will buy a Toshiba because they too are superior to dell and their garbage.

before I destroy my dignity as a human being I will buy an HP laptop with an Athlon processor as I have seen them fly like the wind with SuSE's athlon kernel.

before I loose my self respect as a Wolmerian I will scrimp and save and buy an Alien Ware

before I sell my soul to dell I'd buy a sager they happen to use the same mainboard maker as Toshiba.

I would rather tear out the rest of my hair and nuter myself before I buy a dell.

I would rather degrade myself with a gateway laptop than degrade myself with a dell.

I do not care much for support... because I preffer laptops, like the IBM, that come with a massive set of self healing tools (you all should see what that little blue button does)

since IBM doesn't care much for people having problems they build the machines right in the first place (although they are ugly)

support means ****ty hardware.

A laptop should be like a calculator... dell only compensates with EXCELENT support because they know their stuff is cheap.

But what is most important is that I do not run flaming windows so I don't need no stinkin support.

If it is a hardware issue then my warantee will cover it and if not I HAVE THE ELECTRONIC SKILLS TO SUPPORT A LAPTOP MYSELF otherwise I park the damn machine and buy another.

Dells remind me of an infested, swollen, rotting festering bluebottle maggot filled grave.
An insipid abominable creation. A device of the devil.

I fear my fingers would fall off if I get the stench of a dell on me.

And if I can't get a x86 laptop I want i'd rather scrimp and save and buy a MAC laptop with OSX and tell the pc world to kiss my copper coloured 4ss

I have A Dell Inspiron 5150 Laptop and if it even have cheapness inside, it is more powerful than any desktop I use at work. These desktop r new IBM PCs with the same specs as my loptop.

So Please!!!

you don't get it do you kid ?

Windows is the top OS in the world... and it completely dominates.

An Dell is rocking the PC hardware world by storm... it too wants to dominate.

AIDS is rocking the world and it too wants to Dominate.

SARS spread like the wind with the same agenda although it seems to have burnt itself out.

Read my many posts on Microsoft ... if you have the right marketting and support strategy you can package and sell a box of dirt and the rest of these cattle will follow the leader till he jumps off the cliff or dies. Then they go looking for another leader.

regardless of the construction of the device under the hood.

I never use to dispise dell pc hardware as much as I do now but then it so happens that I use Linux.

And so far I have never installed Linux on a dell laptop or PC that didn't give me SERIOUS trouble. I mean real honking trouble because Dell always changes something standard because it is cheaper to do so.

Right now I am using KDE 3.3.2

I was recently surprised to find that my sony laptops and ibm laptops have direct interfaces built into the new KDE. The developers are trying with dell but they change too mcuh and it is too flaky.

The same model dell this week will behave differently next week.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v516/gillion/sweet.jpg

Only recently were the kernel developers able to get some dell laptop hardwaresupport into kernel that helps significantly. But unfortunately dell will screw the pooch once more and mess something up.

I have installed Linux on HP, Toshiba, Sony, IBM, Dell and Sager and only the 3 dells gave me trouble. And they were all different models.

The 2 toshiba's ran without a problem even the onscreen display worked.
The Sony's sweet... all 3 ran sweet and they were 3 different models.
IBM only 1 hands on but I assisted on the phone for 4 more and they too ran sweet. Different models. The one sager I helped out online and that too was a simple breeze.

Every striking dell I have enountered gave me or the person I was helping major trouble. And some of them are here on TechJamaica.

Now I am a lone wolf, solitary by nature, so what ever rocks who and where I don't care much. What I care about is if it rocks for me, and so far nothing made by dell recently has rocked me.

My emphasis is what is in the belly of the beast.

That said read my previous posts on laptop hardware.

Search for quanta under gillion.

I do not care about internaitonal reatings when it comes to hardware.
Windows is #1 people only watch the money... I am a technocrat. I watch the nitty gritty hardware details.

Dell cuts corners to maximise profits to create a cconsumer product.

I will stick with the laptops and hardware that are built with old school technocrats like myself.

Again...

A Dell is like a nice Hyundai.

An IBM or Sony is like a BMW

All good cars... but I will go with the german built BMW over the silly korean built Hyundai anyday once I CAN AFFORD IT.

Otherwise I will rather buy a HP which is like a honda or a Toshiba/Sager toyota.

Ask anyone here... I am not a fan of "ordinary folk popularity" I march to my own drum. IE is still the number one browser in the world. Is it good ? yes... for those who use it and don't know ANY BETTER.

--get me ?

dells can never be king......they lack too much in everything about their products
whoever buys a dell is jus a person who is very vulnerable to childish marketing techniques and nobody in the professional world looks at this product for its quality but only for its cheap price.
just my opinion

Anyway, we are here to talk about Dell computers. As I was saying my laptop is a Dell Latitude with the following spec:

Now thats the true specs on my Dell. Any questions?

i thought you had the p-m 2.4ghz
why did you change it?
that was your original post
i checked dell's site and there was no 2.4 ghz option, the only 2.4ghz mobile processor is the p4-m and the lattitude doesnt come with p4-m processor

so being such an expert in the IT field how could you have made a mistake on the specs of the dell that you HAVE and when you are working on this computer everyday?
