View Full Version : BB no longer needed, iPhone has Push?

I got to understand that the iphone now has push capability. what this means is that you dont have to be running an application to get an automatic notification of a new message, new feature, new whatever. It automatically notifies you.
Now, How does this stack up with BB? Cuz if it is a winner, then i'm afraid the only reason for me to get a BB would be nullified by the iPhone.
edit: If the price is the same, which would you choose in this case?
n.b, i dont understand fully understand the push thing.

I think the push feature will be handled by a separate app (correct me if i am wrong). I don't see why it couldn't be native to the phone. There will always be room for BB even though i am an iPhone fan.

Sad to say but i have to admit thinks are looking up for Apple now more than ever with this new firmware release. Now i consider the Iphone to be a phone, before i only saw it as a Ipod that made calls and had wifi.

Ha ha good points man.....Frankly if this new release stacks up to what they claim it can do then who knows I might just switch to the Iphone as the main purpose of having a Blackberry is full internet support via emails & messaging.....It sounds like the Iphone is coming back like Mase.

Just by adding the landscape keyboard in text messaging, has revolutionized the Iphone for me, I read the this firmware adds about a 100 new features to the phone (although some of them are basic feature that should have been in there in the first place)....but for the first i will say....:sold:...for the apple Iphone

I like Iphone but I doubt I will be swithing anytime soon as I am a post-paid digi customer and have not intentions to go with LIME nor Claro as most of my frens are digi ppl.
Digicel would have to have an unlimited data plan for the Iphone similar to plan to that of the berry....I would surely switch then!

the question you have to ask, can you get unlimited data/interent on the iPhone similar to what you can get on a berry ...
Something telling me that for a while its going to be a berry only kidna thing, so even if the phone gets push mail and a official msn/yahoo stand alone IM client, without unlimited data it makes no sence really.

I get what you are saying but just to play devil's advocate......isn't a phone supposed to make calls? You did say you considered it an iPod that made calls, not a phone.

Until Apple gets a secure network similar to RIM then there is no real competition to the Blackberry.
Look how long it took Apple to do cut, copy and paste............
Getting an iphone network rolling, now that would be the icing on the cake.

I vex with apple, cause it took the soon launch of the palm pre for them to fix all the problems they been having. They basically put the iphone back a little on par with the palm pre. And the previous poster is correct, until they have an unlimitied data plan here in jamaica, the bbservice is untouchable. Apple won't ever do the network thing like rim though, cause it take a lot of maintenance and they not in that market, maybe rim should sell their service to other phone manufacturers, but then their phones would lose sales...hmmmm...

Thank you for helping me save sometime, by responding to that fellows remark for me.
Its not all about making calls now-a-days. Most or all phones releases this year have cameras on them, that shows that the default use of a phone has also grown from a communication device to small portable cameras as well.

Push Notifications is no substitute for multi-tasking IMO... and I love my iPhone. I'm impressed when I use my friend's one year old Curve, and I have multiple applications open, and no problem.

Hv_Thugg I gather this poor battery performance that you're referring to is limited to the Storm cause I get roughly 14 hours at full go from my Bold and I am always on it? Curious what is the battery life you're experiencing on your Storm?

Well I know you're a techie still so you're probably already doing these things but do you have the wifi running? Added to that it is also recommended to close those internet based apps which you're not using as they constantly communicate with the cell tower and hence they drain your battery life. Anyways for me I only keep the radio running and pretty much disconnect the bluetooth and wifi once I am not at home and that gives me about 30% more power to go through the day.
What you think? Oh, do you have any suggestions to improve battery life other than those listed above?
Share your thoughts?

Perhaps you misunderstand what "Push Notification" is. It is a mechanism for sending messages to the phone and to applications which are not running in the foreground. This is a feature of the iPhone Operating System. I cannot be provided by a third party application - it must be by necessity a service of the operating system.
An example of an application of this feature is in instant messaging. Since very few applications on the iPhone are permitted to run in the background (barring jailbreaking), then an IM app would be useless unless it is running in the foreground. If you switch to the phone, or to web browsing for example, then you would be unable to get messages. With push notification, Apple's push notification servers would act as an intermediary, forwarding any received messages to your phone and to the IM application. You would then receive an audio or visual cue notifying you of the message. You could then open the application to view the waiting message.
There are a handful of application which currently have a push notification system - namely mail and the voicemail app. Some third party apps utilize the push email to make up for the lack of push in their applications. Beejive messenger for example will keep you logged into your messenger services and send you an email when you receive messages.
