2G, 2.G and 3G with (With to respect to the GSM Platform).
You guys remember all the hype surrounding 3G phones during the period 2000 to 2003. Plans to implement the network is still alive in the mobile telecommunications arena. But some telecomms are now holding back on spending as it’s proving to be too expensive. The implementation plan is an incremental one which involves upgrading from 2G to 2.5G then to 3G and in the far future 4G, by adding features piece by piece. For a while I was a bit confused on this topic, but took some time out to research, put things in perspective and share it with you folks.
3G Standard:
1.High-speed, mobile access to the Internet.
2.Your choice of entertainment on demand. This will include movies (on the device's high-resolution screen) and music (on the device's in-built MP3 player).
3.Video-conferencing (using the device's in-built micro video camera).
4.Mobile shopping (m and E - commerce). Browse available items and pay using electronic cash.
5.Travel information: congested roads, flight departures. And if you get lost, find your current location. Also get location services.
[Just think of all the goodies you can at this level].
2.5G Standard: (Stop gap between 2G and 3G Technology)
1. GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) functionality – pocking switching circuitry from the providers end, GPRS also supports the IP protocol enabling connection to public and private networks that use the X.25 and TCP/IP protocols.
2. Introduction of Enhanced GSM called High Speed Circuit Switched Data (HSCSD), then the introduction of EDGE with data rates are three times faster than GPRS. Realistically, the maximum rate that EDGE will be able to achieve will be 150Kbps.
3. SMS (Short Messaging Service), MMS (Multi Media Messaging Services), Faxing.
4. Hardware integrations- FM radio, Digital cameras, modems, color screen handsets, etc.
5 Moderate internet browsing using WAP
6. Data transfer speeds of up to 114Kbps
2G Standard (GSM in its infancy)
Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM)
1.Digital network
2.Circuit switching
3.Limited amount of users connected at one time.
4.Simple data supports.
1G Standard
1. Analog network.
2. Simple Voice communication.
Not much I can say about the 1G era. Cellphones were just coming in then, you remember those huge hand set? Yes those were 1G.
So where is Jamaica in all this? Well, having digical here as given us the opportunity to taste 2.G, and agree or not C&W is just stepping up to the plate. My only concern is this: digicel as been introducing handsets but not providing some of the service the phones are capable of hosting. Web browsing etc.
The only nation in the world to be using 3G is the Japanese. Oh yes they are full steam ahead. NTTDOcoMo mobile are been toying with 3g criteria’s I mentioned above for about 3 years now. They have been trying to license the technology to the US and Europe for a some time now.
My question to you guys is, who do you think will reach 3G realm first the GSM/GPRS or CDMA/TDMA?
My little summary of the concept is:
Highly integrated and multifeatured phones + Services + highbandwith and Unified backbone =3G
Peace,
Kacey
