hey- first post :D

when i am in JA I have a digiflex SIM that i usually just pop in whatever phone i am touring with

if i bring my unlocked GSM Treo 600 (soon to be 650 hopefully!) I am wondering what kind of data services I can expect to receive w/ digiflex? WAP browsing? dial-up access for my laptop? hi speed data of any kind?

thanx

wap browsing is there, the dialup access is possible aslo but it'll run you pocket too hard so forget that (us c and w for that, they have a flat rate charge to be implemented) hi speed data..... i think not. get some dsl if u want high speeds.

Since we're on this topic ... a person that I know has a Treo (not sure which model) but he's having problems configuring it to work on Digicel's GPRS. He used the standard settings but with no luck. For clarity, can someone remind me of the settings need for a Treo to work on Digicel's GPRS.

So does any one know how to set it up properly? I need to know this as well.

Well funnily enough I got a Treo 600 from TJ recently and it has been surfing the net quite happily. Even got the MMS services to work recently. Haven't checked the mail services yet but all in all it seems to be running well. Current WAP settings are as follows:

user:wapuser
password:wap03jm

APN:wap.digiceljamaica.com

Bear in mind that your user profile has to be provisioned for the service by Digicel prior to inputting these settings in your unit.

Feel free... as a matter of fact. Just set up email on the phone not too long ago and it seems to be functioning.

hmmmm.... What's your current GPRS configuration? Also has your SIM been provisioned by your service provider to support the APN you entered? Is there GPRS coverage in your area (do you see a little triangle at the top of your signal bar)?

I called digicel and they claim to be doing maintenance work on the GPRS network. Although honestly, not dissing, but the girl sounded very clueless.

Anyway I will try it tommorow.

Im using:
user:wapuser
password:wap03jm

APN:wap.digiceljamaica.com

I also tried it with and without the IP address 172.016.007.012

Well, if ur sim is setup for gprs, and all the settings are in ur phone already u should be fine. If u just setup ur number for gprs then a restart is needed to register ur number properly for gprs. If that has been done then It might be the settings ur using.

Greetings Edge,

Have you found any site that sells really nice accessories for the treo. I need a new case and other stuff. The sites that I have googled ain't cutting it.

Their were some good stuff on ebay once, but haven't come accross them again.

Well you guys say the settings Im using are correct....and GPRS was set up on my number ages ago, I use to use it before....so I guess Im just stuck without the internet :(, which was why I bought the treo.

Ahh good... Good... Good. Should've worked with either but Good good good. The former would've required a setup also of the WAP server as your proxy. Welcome to the Treo on the Web pose :D

Remember now that if any of you guys need apps for your Treo 600/650...you can email me codeboycultus@hotmail.com I'll be glad to hook you all up. or just add me to your msn. Reason for this is because I am getting to understand that lots of young Techies are getting into the Treo hype....but they then start complaining about not having any apps to utilize the power of the gadget. The Treo I must say can accomplish any task that you'd like it to accomplish and I mean any....my Treo 600 has been the perfect laptop replacement for MY LIFESTYLE. I use it for anything....I can give you all the same power for free...for a limited time only though....call it my Welcome to The Treo World Present..... and remember there are tons of Treo Forums out there dedicated to educating you guys about that powerful little gadget you now have in the palm of your hands..running Palm OS. http://www.treocentral.com http://www.mytreo.net http://www.everythingtreo.com/ are just a few. And remember any app you want I can give it to you for free....till I am not in the mood anymore...

One year later and this thread was very useful! I was unable to get GPRS working on my new second had Treo, but now it is. In summary, here's how you go about getting it done on a Treo 600 (GSM):

Call Digicel and ask them to provision your sim card for internet access.

Go to System -> Prefs on your Treo

From the menu on the top right hand corner choose Network.

Click the "Modify" button

Fill in the following:
Service: Digicel (you can call this whatever you want)
Connection: GPRS
User name: wapuser
Password: wap03jam
APN: web.digiceljamaica.com (notice web, not wap)

Click the "Connect" button. If connection is unsucessful, see troubleshooting below. Otherwise, move on to the next step.

If connection is sucessful, you should now be able to browse using the browser: go to Main -> Web and test it using a URL. Eg. wap.google.com

Troubleshooting.

If you run into problems, first double check your settings (look for typing errors).

Unable to Connect
If you are unable to connect at all (you get a GPRS network error), try the following:

Go to System -> Prefs -> Network. Click the "Modify" button.

Choose Details -> Advanced

Ensure that IP address is set to "Automatic" (checkbox is checked)

Ensure that Query DNS checkbox is also checked.

Now try connecting again. System -> Prefs -> Network -> Connect.

Unable To Browse

If you are able to connect from System -> Prefs -> Network, first ensure that the APN is set to web.digiceljamaica.com, NOT wap.digiceljamaica.com

If the APN is set correcty, the the following:

Go to Main -> Web

Press the Menu Key (bottom right of keyboard)

Go to Options -> Preferecnces -> Advanced ->Set Proxy

Make sure Use Proxy is NOT CHECKED.

Press OK until you get back to the browser and try browsing again.
