Told yah I was gonna get one ...:sold:
I held off writing on this so i could thoroughly put this baby through its paces and trust me as of now there is NO other phone quite like it ... trust me
Here's why
RIM intorduced this phone as a rplacement and upgrade to the 8820 business phone and the the 8320..as well as the 8120 if u dont mind the size difference ..
What RIM DIDN'T tell you is that it incorporates both the best of the multimedia and business aspects of the current market leader phones into this single model.
The phone DID have some iissues when I got it but those have workarounds and trust me when you are done .. there'll be no doubt u have the best of the best.
I'm currently in the UAE... there is soem restriction on internet access here but that being said here are the facts as I encountered them.
My considerations for phones were:
*My old BB8320 which later quit on me
Specs as tricked out:.... seidio extended life battery ....memory manager... and counteless softwares including... google maps...Facebook, AIM, ICQ, Gmail, Yahoo, Hi5 individual email messengers.... EQO, Cellity, ebuddy, nimbuzz... combined messengers .. used at various times in various situs.... Opera 4.2 browser
Bags of themes including a great Bob Marley Theme, Zen and Today Themes
OS system upgrade to 4.5.0.192....
*HTC Touch
*HTC Diamond
*HTC Touch Pro
*Samsung i900
*Nokia E71
*Nokia E66
*BB Storm
*Iphone 3G
*Nokia N95 16G
*Nokia N96
just to name a few
The main selling point for me was the data service from BB on a blackberry .. all these other phones to some degree can be linked to the BB servic thru Etisalat or DU here.
Google maps and Ebuddy basically would have been enough for both mapping and comms needs. nokia maps cost u and arm and a leg with regular legsand so do their frequent downloads eventho natively their browsers are great speedy and crisp rendering and the E66 has a great screen which uses the accelerometers like in an Iphone to turn the screen to landscape mode if you turn the phone 90 degrees. The E66 turns off all sound including ringtones if placed on its face. The E71 makes data entry and browsing a dream with the keyboard. Most of the others are touchscreens.
OK here we go:
I bought this baby at the Carrefour for about 2999 AED. yes I used my rent money. Its about $65000 Ja. I went home and raped the package on this baby!!!..LOL
power it up and Whala !!.. instantly I started falling in love..the screen may not be large but the phone's overall look and the screen itself makes it look almost cinema like. The quality is great.
The response of the phone once started after about 8-15 secs initally ..was speedy and inviting. u felt the need to try and find even a single flaw on the phone ...so that's what I did.....LOL... dig up ants nest
Charged this baby and took ont he road.. they have EDGE, GPRS , 2G and 3.5G data services here and the phone locked unto these beautiful. You have an option to limit urself to either both or just 2G or 3.5G. This will come in handy ...i'll soon tell u why...
as i said ... yahoo is blocked here.. so i downloaded ALL of the following and had them on the phone all at THE SAME TIME....Cellity, YahooGO!, EQO, Ebuddy, Google maps, GCalc, Facebook, Opera 4.2, Poynt,Viigo, Got-2, G-Flash, MobiPocket reader, Yamee,Flycast,Google mail, Iskoot, Google Talk,Etisalat portal,Beyond411,GRef,EQO, Nimbuzz,BB Messenger, Blinko, Windows Live messenger in ADDITION to the preloaded software. I downloaded more than 5 themes Zen and today and installed them to the phone.
I enumerated all of six (6) email addresses to the blackberry server including my work email so those were incorporated into my mail.
I installed a 16G memory SDHC micro card .. and it saw it even without the OS upgrade.. it even saw a 32G....yes its out ...575 AED or 12000 Ja.. but the 16G was a better deal at 189 AED.
I tossed on movies in MP4 formats.. about 4G of music files and a ton of pictures.
This BB nuh gyap yet !!... It handles...notice I say HANDLES... ALL of these apps as many as 6 of them simultaneously with relative ease.
BTW: Blackberry makes the BEST quality earplugs by far. The quality is far past anything i have yet to come across but for the more expensive ones eg; senneheiser. The Bold has earplug types..Dem wicked !! The 8320 has the semi plug type ... but both handle bass and high responses crisp and deep with no baffling.
I'd buy the earphones independently even if it wasnt for use on my phone !!
I listened to FlyCAST (internet radio) on the 3G data protocol with no problems while instant messaging with Ebuddy and still recieved calls and messages while doing it
This was not without a little tweaking though but even without it .. it can do it ...
Now on to what what the gripe was .....
BATTERY LIFE:
Served me for 3/4 of the day initially because i was using so many things at once ... then something strange happened. While using Ebuddy.. the phone bacame EXTREMELY hot and shut off...This wasnt the first time that somthing like this had happened and i did soem foum reading. i thought it was ebuddy at first and thereafter unistalled it... however it stilll kept getting a bit warm and the battery life was reduced after I removed it.
THE FIX and an EXPLANATION
This is useful for even u non-blackberry users
I upgraded the OS to the newest from an Italian BB provider which u can also get thru Rogers of Canada. I also upgraded the desktop manager. Ran the phone again and it was a bit improved in several areas ...
initially when it started back up it was sluggish . this is because the phone takes a little time to actually LEARN your habits.. sound like crap eh ?:eusa_liar..Ok lemme explain.. remember when I first started the phone and I told u it took 8 -15 secs to startup.. this was as I progressively added applications to it .. each individual application has its own data requirement for it to work fast and efficiently ..so as u open each .. it learns and preloads data even after a shutdown and restart.. this might make the data comms SEEM slow but after about 20 mins its grease lightning..
Nyway.. still had a little issue of the heat and some concern of the battery life after that OS and desktop upgrade ... :eusa_thin
The answer my friends was right in front of mean and so universal that it was not funny ....
If u have had a NEW phone with overheat probs and poor battery life, BEFORE you give it out.:eusa_hand..Try this first
DISABLE 3G/3.5G comms..Use only the 2G unless u find it necessary to download large and fast data. This baby is FAST ..but it also taxes your phone power heavily... and the phone aint gonna stop data comms til u tell it not to whether u commanded it or or u didnt. 3G REALLY sucks the power from your battery at a phenomenol rate and with massive and sharp heat buildup as well.
after that.........smooth sailing.:eusa_danc. Battery lasted for a day to a day and a half with moderate use...listening stored music, messaging , email and phonecalls (about 2hrs daily)... small heat signature but not as significant as before. No Iphone or i900 or any other phone nuh test ....I challenge anyone who says otherwise ...especially with the BB data service to boot
Its an EXCELLENT phone
Footnote:
I toasted a 8320 and i've seen two E66s smoked because of the 3G issue.
My 8320 became a hotplate and quit because of one primary reason .....
With the stock battery . The phone battery power would have been depleted
and it would hav shut down without damage to the internal circuitry.
With the extra capacity battery which in my case provided 3x as much power.. 3-5 days without charging with moderate to heay use....i basically threw a bucket of lighter fluid on that overheat issue....There was as much power as it needed ...so it ran and ran ran and RAN even after it got hot.. hence Pssshhct!! and that funny whisp of smoke and that smell.
You basically have to monitor or actually be in attendance or controllng the phone when using the 3G data network. In my honest humble opinion...
Nyway ..hope u guys get ur hands on one.... I wouldnt to want to be bragging unsubstantiated .:eusa_liar...LOL
