Cell service provider Oceanic Digital Jamaica, which trades as MiPhone, has announced that it will commercially launch its high speed Internet service by June 2005.
Currently, the company is testing the Internet access, and picture-sending capability (called 1XRTT) on cell sites in Kingston. The service will be commercially available in Kingston, first on laptops and then on phones.
"We are really planning to have an initial phase of that service out on the market the first quarter of 2005," said Alex Hill, MiPhone's chief marketing officer, at a media brief at the Pegasus Hotel in Kingston yesterday. "That first phase will be Internet connectivity, the second phase will be Internet connectivity to the handsets - the second quarter of 2005."
This is the first time that MiPhone was announcing a specific date for the commercial launch of its service though it has been testing its system for almost a year.
MiPhone told reporters that its core cell network technology - CDMA - allows it, with a software add-on, to offer 100k speed Internet connections on phones and laptops. This is more than twice the Internet speed that is now provided to those who are hooked up to the cellular service offered by its two competitors - Digicel, and Cable & Wireless Jamaica. No other cell provider in Jamaica has CDMA.

Correction . MiPhone did not launch for quite a while until after Digicel. They got the licence just about the same time but they were way much slower to launch.

yo is about time that they start offering internet, they been sitting on it for how many years! their speeds are much higher than cwj and digicel wap, now digicel will offer edge, and once again we benefit. isn't being a consumer bliss?

Clearly with more telecos in the Jamaican market its only going to be much better for the consumer in the end. I strongly believe that you just need to select a cellular provider based on your given wants and needs.
Digicel redeem us from the dark pit of hell with their GSM service that offers various features which were never available in Jamaica. As a matter of fact I think we are way ahead than most Caribbean islands in the area of GSM technology and the features.
CW has done an excellent job in the area of the GPRS offering, well at least as of today. I think in the section of cost, they are the cheapest on the market far much better than Digicel current pricing.
The question one has to ask now, "Will Oceanic have a great impact on the professional market?", I think yes. They need to ensure that good quality service is available to the mass, and price is not on top of the hills (Beverly?). They will also have to change their support strategy from its current position. The support is only available from 8:00 - 11:00pm, clearly this will not work for people like me.
EDGE (or Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution) is a 3G technology that delivers broadband-like data speeds to mobile devices. It allows consumers to connect to the Internet and send and receive data, including digital images, web pages and photographs, three times faster than possible with an ordinary GSM/GPRS network. EDGE enables GSM operators to offer higher-speed mobile-data access, serve more mobile-data customers, and free up GSM network capacity to accommodate additional voice traffic.
As mentioned before, I will welcome the competition here in Jamaica, its only going to be better for us.

Let me clarify something for those who don't know. Mi-phone is not the same as Centennial, they are two separate companies. Centennial acquired the licence and was very slow in making a stamp for themselves. They got into financial difficulties and were bought out and now operate under the name Mi-Phone. In all fairness, since the "new" company has come into being, they have been making great strides and have impressed me the most out of all 3 communications companies.
For one, mi-phone has the cheapest rates, mi-phone probably has the clearest network (my opinion), mi-phone was the first to launch At home top-up services. I have been working closely with all three companies on a project and believe me, I was most impressed with Mi-Phone, their Infrastructure is the best of the three and they have good resources.
With all I have said, i still find it funny that I do not myself own a mi-phone cell phone: reasons being: i already have two (digicel and c & w), people i know don't like calling numbers other than a number on their network and 99% percent of my friends are on Digicel, and last but not least, i think there phones are too damn ugly.
In closing, i think we need to separate the two (Centennial and Mi-Phone) and be more objective in how we look at the company

Let me clarify something for those who don't know. Mi-phone is not the same as Centennial, they are two separate companies.
Actually Oceanic bid for the licence in 1999 then sold a stake to centennial, thus they owned 49% of the venture. Centennial then sold their 51% holding back to Oceanic. So it is basically the same company.
See Centennial says it is not leaving Jamaica (http://www.techjamaica.com/content/view/528/2/)
I agree about CDMA phones being damned ugly plus they are not supported as widely as GSM by the major phone suppliers. Hence such ugly things as Audiovox phones.

Enhanced Data Rate for Global Evolution - Its basically higher GPRS speeds. It falls within 2.5Generation, if I am not mistaken.

Man i want some fast data speeds flowing thru my phone. If they come with some good rates, maybe a flat rate or something, then EDGE may give them the edge.

November 3, 2004, 09:22 PM
They plan to use edge, its just that edge is handset dependent and not network dependent. Handsets with Edge are generally expensive too.
Back to the matter at hand, CDMA is by far the better technology. In all areas, we all know its the clearest of all networks. No competition there, the only drawback is that it costs a ton to set up a cdma network. Guys also dont forget that CDMA is the future (3rd Generation - WCDMA).

November 3, 2004, 09:24 PM
The thing with Miphone is that CDMA is expensive and if they r not careful they could fail miserably in Ja, although they have the better network. Marketing and straegy is key to succeed in a market such as Ja. The high speed will come, it might just take some time.

Please note that CDMA is widely used in the USA by some of the top carriers, Verizon and Sprint are all running the CDMA networks. I also think Nextel is using this technology.
Nevertheless, I really like the idea of just changing a chip and using any provider available in a particular area (the power of the GSM network).
I will however welcome unlimited high-speed Internet access over the cellular network from any provider, using whatever technology of their choice.

i think the name of the company is noatech I saw the ad in the paper too. They didnt include details of the service but gave some numbers to call for more information. I'm wondering though there must be some major advantage to this system cause physically it just looks like a home telephone with an antenna running on a cellular network why not just get a cell phone???
Anybody that knows the details let me know...

I'm sorry, this is Bruce the Mongoose. he is to be found on the noatech site. http://www.noatech.com/

It however appears that my initial deductions were not entirely accurate as I see that Bruce has a halo. Dare I say we have found the true Bruce Almighty. In either case, I have a very strong feeling that the person that created Bruce the Mongoose© and the person/people responsible for giving what was JBC the name Super Supreme TV have some relation.
