Which System Process can be safely ended from within Task Manager usually with no negative side effects on the system?

Ramesh, explorer manages the windows graphical shell. This includes the start menu and taskbar. You would really stop it without having side effects? :p :)

I voted Mstask.exe. I think it's the task schedular. Only side effect would be your scheduled tasks won't run. Not a huge side effect like explorer. ;)

Answer:

Explorer.exe - You can end this process from Task Manager.

* This is the user shell, which we see as the familiar taskbar, desktop, and so on. This process isn't as vital to the running of Windows as you might expect, and can be stopped (and restarted) from Task Manager, usually with no negative side effects on the system.

Hold up, that doesn't make sense (to me at least).

The explorer.exe process runs the taskbar, desktop, start menu etc. You're telling me that if I stop this process, my computer will keep on ticking?

So what's so vital about Mstask.exe, the task scheduler? How is that vital to running windows? I thought that task scheduler would be even less vital than any other process you have listed.

I need some responses and some links to reputable sites that would provide this answer. :eusa_thin

definately, your computer will keep ticking

Read over the question Arch "Which System Process can be safely ended from within Task Manager?" key words "safely be ended"

So Mstask.exe cannot be ended "safely" from the task manager?

makaveli

Ok, you try it and let me know what happens.

Ok, you try it and let me know what happens.
Also try ending Explorer.exe and let me know what happens too. :)Nothing wrong. Most times ending Explorer, it restarts of it's own accord. If not, just select "New Task" and type "Explorer.exe" (without the quotes!) and <enter> :)
