A burden on the Japanese electronics giant following the PlayStation 3's 2006 launch, Sony Computer Entertainment has steadily risen, attaining profitability during the third of its 2007 fiscal year. Though the division's annual revenue was still in the red for the year, its losses halved from the prior year, thanks to lowered production costs, increased PS3 and PSP sales, and still-strong PlayStation 2 and software sales.

For the first fiscal quarter ended June 30, Sony's games division reaped ¥229.6 billion ($2.1 billion), a 17 percent increase over the ¥196.6 billion ($1.8 billion) the business brought in over the same period last year. PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable sales drove growth for SCE, and the publisher noted that the stalwart PlayStation 2 continues to show signs of age, seeing a slip in year-over-year sales. Despite the slip, the publisher noted that PS2 software and hardware sales continue to contribute to the games division's operating income, which stood at ¥5.4 billion ($50 million) on the quarter, up from a loss of ¥29.2 billion ($270 million) a year ago.

have to wonder why there aren't many more ps2 games coming out. I mean its gotta be the biggest single install base they can go for. If there was a gta4 on the ps2 almost every jack and jill would buy it.

I wouldnt buy GTA4 on PS2, as I didnt get FIFA 07 because I was waiting to get a PS3 and it burned me to see it only come on 360 with all sorta new physics an ting an PS3 wasnt out yet to get it. I believe some others are like that, as a GTA4 on PS2 might not be the same as on next gen consoles, so they may wait to get it.
Anyway Greatest hits have finally been introduced to PS3's library, so maybe that may help somewhat. I would love to know why Heavenly sword is not on the greatest hits list tho

there is a new ps3 controller. ppl might be waiting and keeping the ps2 cause they lke it and see no reason to upgrade. Just cause a new console out doesn't mean stop using ur old one. It still has use, and it would be great if the developers realized that they should put out some new games for the millions of ps2 owners to get in some game too (unless they had an arrangement with sony to not develop for the old console)

Don't even get me started on the ps2 vs ps3 controller BS! ... rubbish. Its the same controller!

Oh and good to see its catching up. But the games are still hard to make and I don't see that happening anytime soon.
I will but a ps2 when the price goes down. Lots of good games on it that I didn't get a chance to play last gen.

Sony still puts out a whole slew of games for the PS2. Of course you not goin to find exclusives at this point in time but if theres multiplatform games coming to sony it will be on PS2 as well. PS2 is last gen, and there is no sensible way to put last gen over current gen/next gen. You do want to sell your new product dont you? I would love for Nintendo to mek a new Mario for my SNES, but those days are over, and the PS2 days are coming to its close as well. But I think it will remain the best console released for a good while tho

ya thats what they did so they don't get lawsuits filed against them for copying. :icon_idea "Hey lets just switch the left analog stick with the d-pad and we'll be different. Oh ya and add two aggravating black and white buttons in a spot others usually put 'turbo' switches. N how bout we use the same lettering as the SNES controller, but reverse them to confuse those nintendo folks?" The 360 design folks actually realized that 2 shoulder buttons, which the dualshock has had for near 14 years, and to scrap the 6 face button layout which made the Genesis essentially inferior to the SNES

Award? Awarded by who? Its definitely not a popular award in any case as only xbox fanboys will know it, talk about it, and think that. Otherwise, Dualshock owns. The rounded jewel buttons are comfortable in no way. And there's certainly nothing award worthy about 2.4MHz wireless technology or having to possibly change my batteries when it gets low.

same applies for you pezz, talk bout a ps3 when u own one. until then we can continue bashing each others consoles with just as much right. i not seeing 360's flying off shells and in any case it does not prove me wrong as PS3 is flying off at a faster rate now. And ever stop to think that is the red ring why they were flying off shelves to begin with?

I still have mine. Not everyone still has there snes, true. But point is games are still being made for PS2 just none exclusive, as it is last gen so obviously you cant introduce anything new on it at this point in time.

i speak from experience... i don't talk about batterie life of the ps3 controller because i dont lnow about...and i is obvious you dont know about the 360 controller either...and yea the 80GB ps3s are selling fast of course..let see ps3 gets a major prob like that and see what happens

not happening, PS3 failure rates are low, like that of most other good electronics. 360 failure rate is/was high. And I know as much as I need to know about the 360 controller. What challenge do you have for my knowledge of it?

you havent answered my questioned...what if ps3 had that problem, would it be flying off shelves?

just as much as it is now yes. PS3's come with a warranty which sony stays true to its customers with. Not the best but a good example was the PS2's and their DRE's, bad for Sony's reputation but people still bought them, similar to the 360, why would anything change if they find a prob in the PS3. But if there was any, it has already been found, and chances of having them are very low in comparison.
