I think this should be relatively easy but i am having a wierd problem.

The Scenario
XP = 192.168.0.10 tcp-ip, client for MS networks, file and printer sharing
2k = 192.168.0.12 same as above

all plugged into the same hub
all cables tested and working
both pc's are in the same work group OFFICE

Problem.
I can ping the 2k box from the xp box
i can browse by the NETBIOS name ad IP address the 2k box
I can do none of the above on the 2k box

The Network Wizard does not work with Windows 2000 machines.
I was reading a forum yesterday that suggested to use NETBUI...but i am sure that i must can get it to work by IP...

Any suggestions... has anyone come across anything like this?

check your subnet mask on both machines, make sure they are the same.

Its odd that you can't ping the XP from the W2k box.

Are you using ZoneAlarm on the W2K box? Try adding a trusted IP range that includes the other machine's IP.

have you disabled the ping query on the xp box?
you may have got it blocked by a firewall. i think its the tcmp or is it icmp function??
also, just check the enable netbios over tcp box in advance...that should help a lot too......

No... no zone alarm or any other firewall......

I will try enabling NETBIOS over tcp/ip

Does the XP Box have Service Pack 2 Installed?? If yes disable it from the Control Panel and try to ping again..

try creating a lmhosts file on both machine in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc.

192.168.0.10 Machine_name #PRE
192.168.0.12 Machine_name #PRE

at the command prompt type nbtstat -R

As you mentioned before, try the netbios over tcp/ip.
