June 23, 2004, 07:04 PM
Ok from Sunday night I have been noticing a speed difference browsing the internet using Digicel's Gprs on both Knoppix 3.4 and XP. On Knoppix its blazing fast I mean I am getting like 12k/s max and the lowest it goes is 4k/s using it even in the 3am in the morning I am getting the 4-12k/s downloads and I am not being kicked off the net like in Xp. :o :o :o :o :o :o :o
Windows Xp gprs browsing is crawling and crawling. About a month ago I was getting very fast speeds on Xp like the above pertaining to knoppix. I am not complaining or anything. But can anybody explain this to me is there something within knoppix why I am getting such a better response verses Xp? ??? ??? :-\
As you can see below is a screenshot of Knoppix 3.4 max I got this morning 8.0k/s and I wasnt being booted look at the connected time!! 17:57:16 hrs :o :o

Does this work with earlier versions of Knoppix? I have 3.1 and I'm having a hard time setting up the IrDA and modem to set up the GPRS connection...
Any idea if it does work in older versions?

I used knoppix 3.2 with my laptop which has winxp on it. Now when browsing with knoppix on dialup I get download speeds of up to 30k for like 1 hr straight. when I put in xp I get download speeds of like 3k. 10k being the highest. ???

Greatis, or anyone else who used this setup, please explain what phone / hardware you're using, whether it be IrDA, Bluetooth, IrDA over USB, serial cable, etc...

Ok guys this is for the Motorola c332 c333 and E380 phone setup in knoppix. I use both Kppp and the Gprs connection tools that is in built in Knoppix
1. Click on the penguin on the taskbar ,then go to Network/Internet then choose Gprs connection it will give you a message about modem not configuired choose yes option and proceed. You will be given another window, choose Usb connector then click okay. For the cellphone provider choose "other"[INTIT-STRING] you will see AT+CGDCONT=1, "IP" , "internet" let this option stay and proceed if your using CWJAMAICA .
If you using Digicel change "internet" to "web.digiceljamaica.com" and your good to go.
2. Kppp dialup click the penguin ,network internet then choose modem dialer.Choose configure click the device tab, then in modem device setting click on the dropdown then choose /dev/usb/ttyACMO. To make sure knoppix is communiication with the modem click the modem tab, then choose query modem. If there is no communication you may have to choose ACM1 etc and do the query thing again.
Now click the accounts tab choose new, manual setup, choose dial tab then click add, enter the phone number type *99***#1 click okay, type anything in connection name, choose okay then okay again .For the login and password type in anything you want for both then click connect. By the way with this you can monitor your network speed. :)

Which phone are you using?
Knoppix version: 3.4
Cellphone: SonyEricsson T226 (GPRS enabled, no bluetooth or IR)
GPRS Network Provider: C&W Jamaica
ProdMaster I'm using a SonyEricsson T226 with the corresponding USB cable. IT works fine on Win2k and XP.
I followed the instructions that you provided, read the kppp help files to assist, but still could not get it to work.
When attempting to connect using kppp, it displays "modem ready" then "initalizing modem..." with log "Expecting OK" and then hangs and eventually fails. As stated before, I read the kppp help files and it stated that the problem was due to kppp not having proper ownership of the modem/usb device or something with the configuration.
When setting this up on Win2k or XP you need a cable driver and a modem driver.
Could it be that Knoppix needs drivers for the cable or is picking up my internal modem and not the modem in my cellphone?
Any ideas anyone...

its not picking upyour internal modem cause every linux distro i've used the gprs with pics up the phonew without needing drivers. but you can try the drivers approach if you want, it may work to your favour.

Suse 9.1 internet connection with motorola c332-c333 E-380
Click on the green lizard icon to the left of your taskbar another window pops up ,choose system then "YAST".
In the Yast Control centre choose network devices then choose modem. Another windows popups up which shows "initialising modem configuration" which is trying to detect your modem, after this process it should show"Motorola Pcs Motorola Phone {330} depending on your phone the name might be different.
Now higlight your modem, choose configure, modem parameters ignore and choose next, select internet service provider (isp) choose custom providers.
In provider parameters type "cw" or anything you want it doesnt matter, phone numbers, type *99***#1 or any number you normally use to dialup to gprs, username and password you can type anything. Now choose next for connection parameter choose next then finish, a window comes up now about saving modem configuration.
After that another option comes up about mail setup you can proceed with that or ignore.
A little windows pops up with the name Kinternet click on the little icon that looks like a plug, click on it and now you should be dialing up to gprs.Right click on it then choose view log to see it its connecting. There you go!!!! :)
No luck with kppp only kinternet.
WOW THE PAGES ARE LOADING FAST LIKE DSL ON SUSE 9.1 :icon_eek:

do you have the intiz string correct in the advanced modem settings
what init string as in AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP",'internet"
i thougth it woudn't be needed, i've used gprs on knowppix from 3.3 was out adn i never needed it so i don't see the deal with suse, (although it was kppp that i used and not kinternet as you guys seem to be using). but since you have it working i'm gonna try what you did, what init string and where should it go

has anybody ever used the motorolla e380 to do this, because i just booted up my system in knoppix and i was able to set up the connection in the kppp dialer and even query the modem which showed that it was detected and also working. but the problem lies with thedialing when i dial up it says phone is not responding....

hey i got it to work and i'm actually browsing via suse now, it seemed it was the int string it looks like the first time when i tried with the int string i had accicentally placed a fullstop instead of a comma, so it wouldn't work. but it does now hurrrahhh. :D
