Hi Donovan what I am intrested in is the time period we are looking at for the lab to be up and running, whether or not it is a work in progress or you guys need more equipment........I would be willing to donate a machine and give up some time to the group because I belive it is a very good cause......

Three machines sounds like a good enough start to me.
What is needed to get them up and running?
What distros do you have?
Do you need help loading and configuring Linux, Samba, Bind or Qmail? Let me know, I am willing to donate some time.

Thanks Guys for all your replies,
Three machines is hardly enough for what we intend to put in place..
The three machines we have now can only serve as utility servers within the infrastructure that we intend to employ for the lab....don;t get me wrong..we don;t intend on say 50 machines, but enough to suitably demostrate the funtinality and configuration of each network funtionality (DHCP/DNS/PROXY/HTTP/FTP/etc)
we wnat to use at least 3-4 distros (RedHat, Mandrake, Caldera, Xandros) if this goes well, I would like to see a 4 box cluster setup!
One of the things that I'm stressing along with teh command line imperative, is that we have decent machines that can run KDE/GNOME without waiting an hour for a screen update.
Currently with only three machines...we can only use them in conjunction with the Linux Lab...
The next step is to come up with a master plan for the network infrastructure...I have a draft which will be released soon, once it gets through committee.
What we need badly is: Machines, hubs/switches, monitors, CPUs, Keyboard, mouse..

Here is my concern.
JALUG has asked members to study for the LPI exam.
The exam requires a detailed knowledge of the commands and their options. People need to practise. They need to type in ls -a and see what it does. Then they need to type in ls -l and see what that does.
Most members don't have access to a machine with Linux.
How are they going to pass the exam in the next few months if they don't have access to those 3 machines now?
I recommend a long term plan which is broken down into short term, medium term and long term stages. Use what we have now while we grow the lab.
If we wait too long, people are going to lose interest.
What do you guys think?

Jamrock.....I believe that is what I had encapsulated here...we will use the three machines to do what we can now....
BTW: the Cyber Center (Linux lab) is open 6 Monday to Saturday until 7 pm each day...so those wihtout machines will be able to have access.....
I think that you'll find that many of the people who want to take the LPI already have Linux on a machine someplace......
On March 8, 2003 afater the Jalug General meeting the LPI study group will meet and set the first obejectives as outlined by the syllabus...
thanks for you feedback....

Hey guys I just think the meetings are too far apart......should at least meet once every two weeks if this Lab is to be established.....

Let me noutlined the current status...
(1) Until we get some more machines for the lab....there isn't much more to do in the Linux lab
(2) The LPI Study group meets monthly..this was voted on at the last mtg....The format is that of a review and summary of objectives outlined for that period.....
We will be going by the syllabus..each person will have to make the effort to try and complete that section of the syllabus for the next meeting....We will meet as a group and review and ensure that everyone has a sound understanding of each objective to be covered.
(3) Any Jalug member cvan go to the Cyber center and get access to the Linux Lab..
I hope this will shed some light on the various things going on..
thanks

Way to go Tech_Guru.
How will the machines be used? Can we have one that can be used for Linux installations?
For example, suppose someone wants to learn how to install Mandrake. Would a machine be available for someone like Pigeonflight or Tech_Guru to take him/her through the ropes?
I guess you wouldn't want people just going in and installing stuff on all the machines. Perhaps one could be designated for that purpose.
Just a thought.

Hey Jamrock if u looked at the network diagram here....
http://omar.andrewsjm.org/linlab.jpg
You will see a a server designated for Development called Development Server.....It was with the same thinking as yours why I put such a machine in the Lab Diagram........
