Ok here is a review I found of the new game. It appears it's turning out to be a simulation in a sense now. :eusa_clap

Need for Speed Underground 2 is out to prove it's more than a pretty face. The original Underground after all, probably sold a lot of its five million-plus copies on the strength of simply being a great-looking game (although it was a hell of a lot of fun to drive as well). The sequel still looks great, of course, but there's far more substance beneath its style.

Much of that substance is simply a matter of surface area. The city -- now available for free roaming at any time, although the sun never seems to rise -- is divided into roughly four sections. At the south end, there's the industrial area, with wider, darker, emptier streets. One step north, over a small inlet, is the city core, the largest area, a mix of tight downtown streets and wider encircling boulevards surrounded by the freeway beltline. Taking the freeway northward leads into the upper-class suburbs, which have some of the most unpredictable turns and shifts in elevation. Finally, the northernmost area features twisting mountain roads, where the linear drift-racing competitions take place.

Most races are confined to just one area or another. Initial D fans can head up to the mountains and just drift downhill to their hearts' content. The toughest challenges span the entire length and breadth of the city, though, running from the south side into the hills and all the way back again.

Just finding your way around is a little daunting at first, though. Early outrun races (one-on-one impromptu challenges in the style of Tokyo Xtreme Racer) are easy to lose when an opponent knows where to make a sudden turn. The game offers a detailed interactive map and navigation system to teach players the lay of the land, though. Critical locations are shown on the map in different colors (circuit races, shops, outrun opponents), and it's possible to filter out all but the kind of locations you want to see. Switching on the GPS navigation system pops up an arrow that points out detailed directions to a destination, including where to turn and when -- it's not just a Crazy Taxi as-the-crow-flies indicator.

Checking out the sheer scale of the city is pretty cool -- you can park on an outlook up in the hills and see practically the entire game world laid out before you -- but what's more compelling about it in gameplay terms is the variety of racing challenges on offer.

Every circuit or point-to-point race in the original Underground had more or less the same character. That's not at all true in Underground 2, where even two races through almost the same areas can demand different styles of driving. Downtown streets have sharp turns and crowded traffic. The freeway belt route rewards all-out speed. Up in the mountains, good drifting ability is key. Out in the suburbs, the blind turns and sudden elevation changes demand extremely quick reactions.

Outside of the main race types, the drag mode hasn't changed much, but drift mode has been expanded considerably, and street-cross racing is entirely new. There are many more drift courses, some of them much more complex and technical than the tracks in the original Underground, and competitive drift races pack two, three, or four cars onto the track at once. Street-cross, meanwhile, is meant to be a test of cornering ability more than all-out speed, featuring closed courses with a wide variety of tough turns.

In addition to offering a much wider variety of performance tuning options, Black Box has tweaked the fundamental vehicle physics a little to suit the new selection of race styles. The cars are now a little heavier (virtually speaking), with a lower center of gravity than the slightly skittish, go-karty vehicles in the last game. A lighter, nimble car still ping-pongs around in the classic style, but in general the cars are a little more sensibly behaved. Improved stability control is also on offer for players who want to toggle that and enjoy more predictable cornering, although experts can turn it off for bigger drifting potential.

The original Underground let you build a car that looked just how you wanted it to, but the driving experience afterward was more or less the same for however many millions of players picked up the game. Underground 2 promises to extend that level of freedom and choice to the driving experience, and so far it looks to be able to deliver. Electronic Arts promises to have even more odds and ends to reveal about the game, so this won't be our last look at it -- watch out for more reports as its November release approaches.

I see you havent played this game much....
It's next near to impossible to get perfect shifts and still be under 17sec. You have to do alot of drifting and that messes up your shifts. Take it or leave it...

In Drag shifting doesnt matter, its all about the drift. Thats the only way to get fast times. I have purposely come in second just to get a better time.

I can do better times with no perfect shifts just by drafting. That has been proven many times when we were comparing times last year. Perfect shifting doesnt matter. It is a fact.

if your behind someone it works otherwise perfect shifts make that difference..

Ok tell me this. Assume we r using the same car, same mods etc. U in front of me doing perfect shifts, I am directly behind u (drafting)changing gears without getting them prefectly. Who do u think will cross the finish line first????

if i am doing perfect shifts (6 out of 6) and you do (2 of 6) i going to be in the lead.

You behind trying to draft..... :eusa_hand

You know what, you would win...

MiTcHiE
September 8, 2004, 12:58 PM
Although for me to win I would have to time my pass perfectly and u would have to drive fairly, which means no blocking. More than likely 4 out of 5 times I would blow my engine upon reaching beside u. But if done correctly I could beat u without shifting perfectly. I wish I could find the thread that we posted our best times for drag, but I think the pics got messed up in the upgrade.

Actually MiTcHie is right. Perfect shifting does no good at higher speeds.

at higher speeds it's not much good but it does matter

MiTcHiE
September 8, 2004, 01:34 PM
I just started playing it again, so u will have to wait until i reach far enough to get the skyline with all the mods. But If I remember correctly, I could do 19 seconds easily without drafting all the way through because i would blow the engine.

Blowing the engine alone should prove that perfect shifting is slower than drafting. U can never blow ur engine by perfect shifting only. Blowing the engine proves the car will be going faster.

I mean i know i never perfected the game cause after i beat it, i kinda got bored with it. I think i gonna start over too just for the fun of it even tho i still have my profile with everything.

i played the demo yesterday and it is really nice. however, i keep hearing crashes before they actually happen. strange i kno.

November 3, 2004, 12:13 PM
ok so I played the demo over the weekend, it was ok, I mean the sounds are sweet, visuals, lovely, and the different mods they did to the car, lovely. I like the idea to some extent that u'll have to drive to the different spots to get specific upgrades, some of them u'll have to look for. The game looks ok but what I really want next to this is Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition due next year.

samurailos
November 19, 2004, 07:46 AM
Well yeah sounds have definitely been improved, but the cars in the demo weren't that hot, the silver one and the green one looked ok but the others were monsters, the yellow one has nice handling though, but i noticed with anti-aliasing enabled the cars feel heavy and slow, with it off the cars look a bit pixelated and the handling feels sweet so hopefully dats resolved in the full game.

Ropy
November 19, 2004, 11:02 AM
samurailos - Pixelated u say, hmm. Your vision is blurred dude, too much dust in ur eyes.

samurailos
November 19, 2004, 02:11 PM
Yeah the edges look pixelated when u turn off AA, and the road too, its not that clear but with a gamer's eyes like mine i notice these things, but with AA enabled u don't see em, thats how it worked in all games, AA kinda gets ridd of pixelation, by the way i have a fx5200 128mb video card. what card u have Ropy? and theres no dust in my eyes.

Virus_NCU
November 19, 2004, 02:27 PM
Yea!! i finally got my copy of the full game. withen 1 day i reach 10% of the game. i would say the game is easier than underground. in the game i now own 2 pimp out car that includes a H2. i cant play the game to full quality though i have to turn down the details to the lowest and customise what i want to turn on. and it still look good and run fast.

samurailos
November 19, 2004, 02:33 PM
I can run the demo with enhanced contrast off, and aa off and it runs fast, otherwise its slow but still looks ok, so anyone can hook me up with a copy for pc that is or can i copy sumones game discs, pleassee, I'm in Manchester.

I love this game, it is like an american version of Shotouku Highway Battle Series, just a with huge budget and american stylings, I wish they had implemented the racing gang element from that series, where leaders of gangs challenge you with this AWESOME COOL Intro, with Slow motion, brake pads glowing Guitar riff's..(oooh baby, still gives me chills)
