i recently had a virus attack forcing me to format my hard drive and install a fresh copy of windows xp pro
i installed the windows xp pro service pack 1 and everything was ok but i cannot see my other computer on the network. the network cards work fine.
i ran the network wizard about 50 times but i still cannot see other computers.
when windows was just installed the network was working just fine, i was over my bredrins yard stealing some dsl but after installing some drivers the computer would not get any dsl
i formatted the hard drive again and installed service pack 1
it worked, i got dsl but after rebooting the computer it wasnt getting dsl again

please help

check the IP settings, on a new windows installation the default would be "Obtain IP automatically". when working with dsl an IP need to be set, try playing around that a bit and halla back.

The DSL modem could be offering IP address via DHCP.
You say u browse for a while then stop... do a netstat -an from DOS with your internet browser closed and see if there are any unusual looking port connections coming from or connecting to ur machine, it seems like possible virus activity

ok.....i dont have adsl at home
i had adsl because i was at my bredrins yaad fixing the comps

so i at home now on my network
the host has a manually configured ip adress
but when i check the client(my comps) it says invalid IP something
how do i configure my client to connect to the network
i using a internet gateway too
shared 56k over a hub
56k from host then thru hub to my comps

but the problem is the client or the host not seeing each other.

Does the host have ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) enabled? Try changing the hosts IP setting to "Obtain IP automatically".

just a couple of things to check first.

That the ip of the comp is in the same range as the host....namely 192.168.xxx.xxx or 10.0.xxx.xxx.....

also the subnet mask should all be the same and use 255.255.255.0 in this case.

That the named gateway in the client is the servers (host) ip.
as the dns should be your isp(internet service provider), then
ensure the clients dns are set for that too. makes for better browsing.

some users will configure the inbuilt network ics that windows uses but i dont use it. this may be relevant when using a 56k modem rather than a router modem for adsl.
there is a free proxy called analogx which can do the job of ics and in my opinion, much better but dont go there until your lan is working properly.

to test, use the search function to find computers and search for the host by name. if it pops up, then you are almost home. have you enabled file and printer shaing? you could to begin with if you dont really want that but it will help in the location of the comps. you can alway switch it off after. not sure if it can be off as i always use it.

lets see how you go from here.....

if these fail, we will start from scratch by deleting your network setup and then running the wizard from scratch on the troublesome client comp.

ok user...if no joy then we wipe the lan setting you currently actually, im withdrawing this advice until the next post cause you didnt say how many comps you had on your network.

so here is something to look at...is this the first time you have done this setup?
if so, if there are only 2 comps, are you using the correct cable? you did say you were running through a hub....so im assuming that the cable is not an issue as it can be MOSTLY the cause of home network failures.
jiggle it to see as a final test....note the lights at the back on the network card.

lastly but not least....lower your 100mb speed in the card proerties to 10mb and see if that helps in seeing the comps. do it both ends as a test.

ok so lets set the network up first and worry about the internet after. from scratch....the following......delete all network connections. lets start anew. assuming xp on all comps.

now basically as you are gonna use a modem, we need to make this comp the gateway,

we need to keep your lan seperate from the net conn as this will be better for security and for troubleshooting.

first you give the pc a name. each pc will have its own name.
the choice is for a workgroup and all comps will have the same workgroup name. call it what ya like.

now you need to run the network wizard (setup a home or business network) and check the box
which says that this is the comp that attaches to the internet and everything else comes thru it to the net....
follow this wizard to the end.

once this is dne for the main comp, you will move onto the second comp and run the same wizard....this time choosing the second option in the network setup....
the one that states you are gonna connect through a residential gateway......
follow that to the end.......

now you should have a local area connection showing in your network places.....when you do view my netwrok connections.
now right click that lan and do properties. on the genral tab, click the show icon in notification area when connected.
this will help to trouble shoot the device and network.

once you have done this, you should be able to investigate properly your lan settings. and once working, you can then go on to install the ICS or INTERNET CONNECTION SHARING for xp.

So i am assuming that the PC is back at your 2 PC Home network now??

First I would check the PC you recently re-installed to make sure the NIC is properly installed/functioning by checking the Device Manager and Checking The Network Card ( If thier is a question sign under NIC there is a problem)

Also make sure both PCs have the same static IP setting( eg PC1 IP -- 192.168.0.10 subnet 255.255.255.0 PC2 IP 192.168.0.11 subnet 255.255.255.0)

Also I would make each apart of same subnet...Under computer name in System Properties click change make sure both are on same workgroup...

From my experience when you run the Home NEtwork wizard you have to do it for all PC in workgroup, not just one PC...
