I am moving to Jamaica soon and I have a laptop with built in wireless but I dont know anything much about the wifi there. I know that there is free wifi in the airport, at devon house, and a few places in new kingston but what about in the country. What are my options if I am travelling around the island especially St. Mary and Portland.

Also my friend was telling me that a cell phone can be used to dial in to an internet connection can someone tell me how that works...Thanks

I think there is a card that you can buy with internet minutes. Maybe some one can shed some more light on this.

WiFi hotspots are not common in the country.

death_knight--I beg to diifer. The GPRS speed on the Nokia D311 PCMCIA card is actually faster than dial-up speed.

lol...don't tell me you're fooled by the "connected at" speed. Please... go to Testmy.net while connected to your gprs and post a screen shot. Thanks!

Actually, he's speaking about a gprs pcmcia card, the speed on those is way faster than a gprs connection through a cell phone.

Sure about that $39 and all island access?
I know of it to be J$1200 + tax and currently it isn't offered islandwide but they're planning to roll out. I tested it where my phone doesn't have any signal and got online so next week when i'm heading to kgn i'll be testing it along the way and see if i'll be able to connect or if it's really as they say that it's only currently available in Mobay, Ochi and kgn.

MiPhone is offering MiNet now for $1200 per month. They have 1Xrtt speed which is about the highest speeds in Jamaica for wireless internet. The Sierra 555 Aircards are the best for their high speed access. They sell them for $15,000 (plus GCT) I am selling them for $7,000. I use one in my laptop and one in my desktop and I am thrilled. Where I live I get the fringe of their 1x high speed but I put up and external GAIN antenna and I do very good out here in the bush :)

Well strangely they work quite well here in Jamaica through MiPhone. MiPhone has an updated PURL and my sierra card is excellent and free of any problems what-so-ever. Actually most people who use these cards and all the reviews rate them highly.

I have been using the card and achieve excellent speed (I am on it now) and I guess that's all anyone ever really needs.

I read on Sierra they came out with the new cards to accomadate the Mac systems. And you can still downware software for the 555 from their site.

I also checked ebay and the average price seems still to be a lot higher than $15 with most but it now around $100.

Did some research on the figures as well, the cards range between $100-$120US per card. Before shipping. Deal again here.
