When you say reward... do you mean gives a pay increase or gives a pat on the back and a heavier workload. If its the latter then i guess he really rewards and values my certification...

My certifications are now pendingm by year end I will be MCSE certified I applied to this company that stipulated that only persons with certification need apply. But I played deaf to that and submitted my resume anyway -- not expecting to get a call. My phone rang 3 days after to set up an interview yhey were impressed with my on the job experience despite my lack of recognized certification.

During my meeting with them they pointed out that with the MCSE or Cisco certs I would get paid more money so if I complete my certs they will immediately have to UP my salary. ;D can't wait!!

What motivates you all to get certified if there is no promise of reward from your bosses?

You know...it really TICKS ME OFF with this certification thing sometimes.
There are some managers that know that this person can do his/her job, and does it WELL. They even admit that you are FAR better than the guy over in the corner with certs but still do not pay you the dough you deserve. They give the guy in the corner THREE TIMES what you are getting paid. At the same time, you probably have to be showing this guy with certs how to do this and do that. You know what....all of this is only getting man vex... >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Take it easy Matro...it's one of those things in life that don't always make sense.
What I've found is that some companies have written policies that speak to the level of compensation employees receive based on their qualifications. It's the reason that in some jobs, you cannot earn above a certain level unless you have a University degree, or a Masters - no matter how good you are at the job! This gets compounded when you get Unions thrown into the mix. In those situations, some employers find their hands tied...sure you deserve to get more...but if you don't have the paper, you won't get it. If Joe Schmoe over there has it, but isn't as skillful as you... he'll get the money.

Now you can look at the situation 2 ways...

1. You can get vex >:( and cuss, but remain skillful but uncertified.
or (my personal favourite)
2. Go get them certs or degrees or whatever, so that noone has any excuse to
tell you rubbish about you not being qualified enough or having the practical skills to perform on the job.

Trust me ... much more satisfying to remove any opposing arguments to your progress ;)

Zeen... I know that the certs are neccesary if you wanna get anything worth called "Pay". ;D
Just reflecting on how unfair this world is.... something that will only get worst.

Trust me though Matro...sometimes the script gets flipped. At some companies, you could be certified till you name alphabet - no more money coming your way.

Some employers favour experience over qualifications and will pay more to people who have more years in the trenches under their belts.

The key is to get qualified and work steadily, building your experience so you have the best of both worlds.

Certifications seem to be more valuable to companies that specialize in providing IT services and solutions to clients eg. a Microsoft Certified Partner usually values having MCSE's and MCP's on board because that allows them to keep their partner status and receive benefits. Also clients like to be assured that the company has qualified, competent staff and certification is one way to show this.

I think in these places you'd be more likely to find pay increases and such for achieving certification.

BCK....I think you are right about the IT company or solution provider on the cert thing....at my company we get evaluated every 6 months or a year.. and cert carries a bit of weight on the scale and it is depending on the evaluation that we get pay increase or not. Of course the evaluation also has other factors such as customer satisfaction and billable hours. I usually prefer to work for solution providers as they normally pay for training course, exams and books. I also believe that they do pay better.
