i inserted a HDD in my PC and install XP on it, but on restart the mainboard will not boot from the HDD.

i have change the boot process excluding the CDROM Drive, anf floppy, and including hdd0-3 and neither did not notice the drive.

note: when i boot from cdrom it was able to see the drive format it, and copy the xp install files to it.

if anyone can aid in my dilemma, please give me a hala!!

Sure we can help, answer these questions to rule out some possiblities

What size hard drive?

Were you able to see the HDD in the BIOS?

Is your HDD set to master or slave?

Is the IDE cable being shared with another drevice (CDROM or another HDD)?

One more thing you can use to troubleshoot is your BIOS............

There is an option in most BIOSes that allow you to auto detect IDE drives...........Normally found under "Standard Settings" run this test and tell us what it returns.............

Also are you receiving some form of error message upon restart if so state this as well...........

size of HDD - 123gb

was i able to see drive in BIOS: YUP

My HDD is master on a cable shared with my DVD-R drive

I have used the autodect and also reset my BIOS (switching jumpers)

no error messages

note: when i boot from cd rom, the installation CD see's the drive and the different partitions on it.

ok then the next thing to do is this.
ensure the hard drive is slave and the dvd-r is master.
also, ensure they are on the correct part of the cable.
having ensured this, go to bios and make sure the boot device is set at hdd1 and not hdd0. in fact check that first and reboot to see if that works without adjusting the switches on the device if they are not that way already. ;)

hey Deakie and igodit, my bad.

i have been busy, but i mus say thanx though.

even though your recommendations were not the solution, it just encouraged me to continue to try. all i did was to retry one of the things i did a the start and it work, so ::):o.
