And because of these holes mentioned many could be 'blasted' again even if you had updated your windows since the last Blaster virus was loose. This is a relesae from Micro$oft today and they are not saying much, we just have to take action and protect ourselves.

I dunno...it really is amazing (4 want of a better word) at the pace these "new" bugs are being released !!!
Someone should sue!

sue who?
its not the manufacturer responsible is it? the manufacturer in this case is doing all he can to warn you of any loopholes that someone may make use of. that frees him from liability. besides, he's protected from that liability in his eula already as are any programs with a decent eula.
basically, you use at your own risk.

I could break down those 3 STEPS into 1
Step One Get Linux

Not to make the best OS look bad, but what happens when worms really start to target the core of the fruit, linux?
Anyone ever take a good look at top, /etc/services, netstat --list, linuxconf ??? :-\

I am not sure I am seeing your point here....
What is "the best OS" referred to?
What am I supposed to find by looking at those apps?

Sure... I know all about the EULA. Did you also know that by clicking that lil "agree" button you have authorised M$ to virtually... hack your pc at any given time they want, and modify any part of the inner workings of your system?
Did you know that M$ can cripple your win2000 server and not be liable?

Therefore since Windows is the guinea pig and many of us in this day and age continue to use it despites its many bugs, let's just do as we are supposed to in the interim, update windows constantly and sit behind your firewall.

yeah matro....cause none of us own any of the software we buy. just the ones we create. and that needs a platform to run on.
now ya see why im against patenting totally. bring down wipo! free up the ideas!

Hey matro, we all know you against windows and all but despite its downside microsoft is committed to continuing to strengthen their software to make it less vulnerable to attack, there is no such thing as completely secure software, not even in the world of linux!
Do you remember the days when every news cast had PanAm or TWA airlines been hijacked that was beacuse they were the most prolific & popular airlines in the world at the time. Windows is similar. No body bothers to hijack Air Jamaica - similar to Linux. Not dissing just drawing an illustration.
That is why windows gets so much attention cause when compared to Mac OS, Linux, unix or any other os, windows is on more desktops than any other os combined.

I have been through this over and over....
I am not a anti-OS person, in fact I use all the different flavors of windows. I thus have a feel of the subtle and huge differences between Linux and windows. ::)
I love to have options and believe that every OS has it's weaknesses and strengths.
The truth of the matter is this, M$ want's users to beleive that windows is THE ONLY OS IN EXISTENCE, which is just not the case. They have monpolised almost every corner and crevice of the computer world. In fact... it is so bad that about half of the people who use windows do not know that there are alternatives.
I view it as a personal responsibilty to show them the alternatives, whether it be MacOS, UNIX, or Linux.
Now you say that windows get's the most attention because it is the most popular OS. That I do not believe to be the case, as the people who direct their attention, the crackers, all should know that the most popular web server is not windows based but rather, of a UNIX flavor.
IF SOMETHING IS ROTTEN, IT WILL SMELL.
I say fix the darn thing !!!

To reamphasize the point that all OSes are vulnerable, especially when it's administrators do not take precautions...
Linux is favourite hacker target: Study
http://www.globetechnology.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20030911.gtlinuxsep11/BNStory/Technology/
The proliferation of Linux within the on-line server community coupled with inadequate knowledge of how to keep that environment secure when running vulnerable third-party applications is contributing to a consistently higher proportion of compromised Linux servers

How does the other major OSes around make users see that they are true windows alternatives? If so how are they doing that? Who are they trying to target in their media campaigns. Why are we blaming Microsoft for keeping locked up and selfish? Look at Wal*Marts worldwide, they are still family owned No outside investor and shareholders who are non family members have a smaller say - Microsoft is no different. Yet Wal*Mart is number one retailer in the Americas and some European countries. Despite the selfish monopoly that M$ have webbed convincing users that there exists no other, how comes you were not convinced? Do you not think that that other users out there can explore their own options without feeling obligated to M$ just as you are not?
I view it as a personal responsibilty to show them the alternatives, whether it be MacOS, UNIX, or Linux.
How do you do this matro?

Despite your true words, the crackers as u call them have not directed their attention to this web server! But they direct their intentions towards users of windows, Think about it if all the unix servers went down how many businesses and users will be affected? On the other hand have you noticed the worldwide chaos caused when windows servers are hit?

The majority of webservers run Apache on a UNIX based OS.
This has been the case from ever since.
Recently, a hacking competition was held with an intersting points system.
More points would be awarded for UNIX,Linux,MacOS servers hacked into.
Less points for windows.... hmmm, funky system eh ::)
It is true that recently more Linux servers are being compromised, but as stated in an earlier post, this is due to holes in 3rd party apps that inexperienced converts deploy. 8)

How many businesses would be affected if all the unix/linux servers went down?
How do you say ..... every single one, di whole a dem, all.
these servers run air traffic control, render farms, data centers,
google.com, print servers, microsoft relies on them for caching their website, banks and most importantly techjamaica.com
On a daily basis every single user of techjamaica depends on Unix for something.
My question. What if everything that was running unix now was switched to windows? :o
