View Full Version : Sony-Ericsson P800 compare to a Stand alone pocket

I had a brief discussion with Chris on Saturday (At CES) about the purchasing the Sony-Ericsson P800 rather than a pocketpc. The P800 puts a phone and pocket pc into one package which I like. Chris on the other hand likes to keep his devices separate and also pointed out the fact that there isn't alot of downloadable apps available for the P800.
So please share your comments.
I really thinking about buyng the P800 or the hp IPAQ2215

actually while browsing the net with my nokia 3650 i have come across alot of downloads for the p800. its a very good phone overall, it has touchscreen features, very much like pda functions. it has microsoft word, or so i was told, i saw some digicel guys using it yesterday. If u want to step up with tech functions this is definitely a good choice, if u r a diehard pda guy, i would advise u to wait a while and read various reviews.
But from what i have heard, this is the S***. everyone has been talking about this phone/pda. it cost so darn much it must be exceptionally good at what it does.

granted the sony p800 doesnt have much over my phone, other than the fact that it can open word and excel documents, and the touchscreen. it does come at a price though. regular price is 45gran. its on sale now.
I guess the ipaq would do its job much better than the p800 but it isnt a phone. the ipaq has loads of features, comes with Microsoft® Windows® Pocket PC 2003 Premium as its OS as opposed to the p800 which ships wth the symbian os. Larger screen, much more memory. But alas it isnt a phone.
The p800 overall should do a decent job functioning as a pda but if it is practical remains to be seen

Cnet Review:
The Maserati of smart phones, the P800 has a steep price and a design that won't appeal to everyone, but it's a sure-fire attention grabber.
The good: Built-in camera; speakerphone; comes with 16MB Memory Stick Duo; solid call quality; Bluetooth and IR connectivity; world phone; wireless e-mail enabled; plays MP3 audio and MPEG-4 video; syncs with Outlook via included USB docking station.
The bad: Standby battery life could be better; virtual keyboard can be cumbersome; slow transfer times; wireless e-mail setup is difficult.

When we first saw Sony Ericsson's P800 a year ago, we couldn't wait to get our hands on an actual shipping unit. Several months delayed, it is finally shipping, but in the time it took to make its way to U.S. shores, several other smart-phone contenders have hit the market. Do those other models have an edge? It's a tough call. Sony Ericsson's flagship product lives up to the hype on many levels, with high-end features such as PDA functionality, world-roaming capabilities, a large touch-screen display, a built-in camera, high-speed wireless Web access, and removable memory. Still, many users--except for hard-core gadget lovers, of course--will probably wait a bit until this one comes down from its initial asking price of $650.

Yah I was just reading over the specs on the IPAQ which cost $23600 an dhas alot more features. It isn't a phone but I have a phone and with the features I looking at here it (IPAQ) seems to be getting the edge.
Chris also pointed out something else to me which was if the phone section go bad I'm in trouble, you could same half the 45g down the drain.

i honestly think they would sell more of the p800 if it was cheaper, spending 45 gran on a cel/pda hybrid is just too much. if it was on par with the price of a pda, then they would have a hit.
Thats a very good point chris pointed out.

The 2215 is a sleek, pocket-sized device about the size of a remote control. Side by side with my 3650, the colors are deeper and more vibrant. Onboard flash card slots (CF and SDIO) make this a killer PPC.
Strengths:
compact size, screen resolution, dual slots, PPC 2003, company
Weaknesses:
No built-in WiFi, lower capacity battery, no cover for SD slot
It aint looking too bad for the ipaq

Buy getting the IPAQ 2215 and a phone with bluetooth or infa red capabilities I would be set and I'm also most sure it would work out to under 45g

Well lets give the phone credit....
(average)
Comparable PDA ....................... $22,000
Comparable Phone.....................$17,000
Comparable Digital Camera........$12,000
________
Total $51,000
Indeed though....should you loose your Sony P800 (If you are silly enough to plan on losing it), you would have lost all three instruments.
I love it honestly......I am kinda worried about it.
Yogi and I are a apart of a three musketeer team. What one does all does. So this is kinda our new headache..... Ah well.
All in due time,.

I have seen the Sony Ericsson P800, infact my Operations Manager has one. It's a pretty good device, phone, camera and pda in one hand. On the other hand the iPAQ is a pretty sweet device I don't have to tell you why.
The iPAQ can be a phone, camera and pda as well with a few additions, if you really want those features check out

If i had to choose i would pick the p800. I am using my nokia 3650 to write this post. Hope i am the first. The p800 is better than my phone in a couple of areas. But my camera is better.

The p800 like the nokia3650 are a couple of the best smartphones available today. They do pda functions quite well. I am starting to wonder y i need an ipaq when i have a phone that does the same.

Hey Mitchie what pda OS does your Nokia use? Palm or Windows?

I dont know if i would call it a pda os, but the name is Symbian 6 or 6.1. The same as the P800. They are both series 60 phones. The best Os for phones out now.

Wifi is one of the major drawbacks of the p800 and one big advantage of a pda.

I have always told my clients that all in ones are great innovative and space saving devices, but for them to be so compact many features are discarded and the most common features are left intact. If that was not the case then the devices whatever they may be would be priced out of reach.
The P800 as is seems to bea great device nevertheless, and would suit a person that already has PC at home such in that way using the P880 as as a phone and PDA would make life a little more mobile.
However, the P800 can't be fairly compared to the HP 2215 iPaq or vice -versa as they have features the other don't and that sets the demarkation. But for phone capabilities and a pda aswell go for the P800, want great mobile apps, speed, storage go for a standalone pda.

Very true, it will come down to if u prefer one device that does a phone well and a pda ok justice, or a good cell phone and a god pda that does everything.
