Microsoft is usually refreshing their desktop hardware products about once to twice a year. We have learned that the Redmond based company has a new wireless optical mouse lined up for this years fall-winter season.
The peripheral desktop device Microsoft Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer Platinum will be available in at least four different designs, including a black leather version. Also in the line up is a new Natural MultiMedia Keyboard.
Microsoft Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer Platinum is an enhanced design of the original IntelliMouse Explorer with improved ergonomics and possibly some sort of interference protection. Unfortunately no information is available on the optical resolution of the IntelliMouse Explorer Platinum. We assume that Microsoft will position the new mouse series against Logitech's MX700, but we will have to wait for the official announcement to make any definitive statement. Most intriguing is the black leather model that Microsoft is going to introduce - most likely targeting executive offices.

just a note of something i found out recently.
some top gamers prefer wires and opt for the logitech 500 optical.
its the ne my boy also uses in the q3 leagues. must say, me like it to. ;D
looks similar to the ones you are showing but they reckon its a good one.
seems the wireless ones let them down in the middle of games without warning or summin. ???

I prefer a wired optical mouse over a wireless. Gaming is one of the main reasons, I would hate to think that I got fragged because of some mysterious interferance from another equipment.... hey, it could happen.
Also, I trust getting my wired mouse to operate properly in Linux than it's de-tailed counterpart ;D
The Boomslang has always been my goal.

I tend to agree with matronyx, a wired mouse is the yway to go if your into linux (not a real gamer so I don't know about that issue). I also think having too many wireless devices in ur house hold is bound to cause a problem 1 day or another

An optical mouse is nice enough for me, just gimme my scroll wheel and at least 2 mouse buttons.

Well the difference is the company and quality of their products. Logitech focus is a little more fine tuned because they focus on hardware products mostly.
They have been creating trackballs and mice for a long time and they do keyboards and speakers also so they do have a better understanding I would say of how to build better devices, especially for gamers based on their history.
Plus their prices differ too.

logitech has been @ the whole hardware thing for a while. thats their main focus. they kno wat ppl. want and they tend to satisfy that need. so quality would be something to go with logitech for.

Not so sure about their pricing structure and that of microsoft! I think they are right on par. But I agree that they have sticked to their concept for a very long time - they created ergonomics at the desktop so to speak. I think they have sticked to the peripheral concept dor decades and for that I give them the nod.
However, what if Logitech came out with an OS? Well Microsoft should stick to the evil its use to 8)

Wow, the mouse looks a lil better now that a few reputable people have tested it.
