Ok.. Devnull had a kinda a bird's eye view crack at this one.. bu I'll put it out anyway... this is a current problem

A friend brings me his OC and sez it aint working... here's the background I'm given.. all his parts are donations... except his case. He had a mobo with a built on vid card and it went bad so he tried switching.. to find that that Mobo as diagnosed by devnull and fam had better use as a really fascinatinatiing paperwieght (my adaptation of their truly scientific terminology)

So here's the skinny

No idea what mobo it is, running 64 MB SDRAM , A AMD K2 processor, no idea size HD (not going to look either) ... on board video (he swithed back to this mobo)

Im nuh have nuh money suh getting a new box is not a solution... ;D

here's where I am...

I get it to turn on and off at the depression of the power button.. but if I stick the second stick o RAM in there it this functionality is lost... same for the monitor.. I get a blank screen, but a steady green monitor light (ready light) with the 64MB of SD.. if I add the second one.. I get the flashing stanby light.

So I've kinda said that the second stick o ram not good... but the machine still nah boot.. nah get no beep code, don't have a manual for the mobo so the lighting switches probly nuh 2 2 right... still can't seem to get the pwoer LED to show :'( ... oh.. and NO BEEP CODES!

mobo is currently unmounted and resting on the bag i got it in... with HD, cpu, cpu fan , memory and LEDS connected...

I feel the HD read on power up..but can't get nuttin.. and I'm out a any PCI cards..

any feedback apart from "Junk it", "get a new computer or anythinbg along those linbes are welcome ;D :p :D

ok....now lets just keep one ram on board. hope the floppy is connected as well.
im willing to bet the OS is either 95 or 1st ed 98. either way, stick a 98 startup disc in there and boot. oh, and ensure you reset the bios. bettery out bla bla.
do this and report. it will tell us what is going on to begin with. let it find the disk etc in the bios...etc etc....
waiting.......

GodKid, sounds like the RAM stick you used is not of the right speed for the mobo. Sticking a ram module into a board which does not support it's speed specification (in clock cycles, or MHz) is a very bad idea. God knows what can happen if you do. Try to eliminate that possibility and tell us what happened.

First off the board gives no beep codes and it has an onboard speaker so the possibility of it not being connected is far off.

You got it from a guy and it wasn't working from then, correct ?

Seeing that its a 64MB memory stick and its on a socket 7 board that combination seems about ok to me. Make sur eits in the first slot. Also try it in another computer alone to make sure it works.

Try resetting the BIOS, you can either do it with the jumper or by removing the battery for a good while.

Power Supply voltage, make sure its at 110.

Try doing a minimal boot (only with the stuff necessary to boot) with only Processor, Memory and Video Card.

The only way to be sure for now is to try other parts that we know are working on the board which will reveal what is functioning and whats not. If you try a working minimal stick of RAM (32MB) just for testing purposes. Get a PCI video Card and another working processor you might see what working.

Will post mor einfo as I think of it.
