Gordon House now has high speed Internet connection, courtesy of Cable & Wireless Jamaica. Both the Government and Opposition caucus rooms at Parliament have also been equipped with special Internet access devices, said the telecoms provider.
The initiative represents a victory for technology minister Phillip Paulwell, who has been lobbying for lawmakers to make better use of technology, but has been met with resistance. "In the future, we're hoping that Mps will establish websites and use these websites to post information for their constituents about what is being done and how problems are being handled," said Paulwell, quoted in the C&WJ release. "This will improve and enhance the entire process of governance." He explained. Added C&W vice-president for broadband, Magnus Johansson: "This is a new way for representatives to communicate. Mps will now be more accessible because technology is making it possible for the people to have one-to-one contact with them.
