This year, the Mico College CARE (Child Assessment & Research in Education) Centre is celebrating its 25th anniversary and they've planned a series of events throughout the year to commemorate this special occasion. The first event took place on January 28 and it was the Official Opening of the Computer Lab at the Centre.
The Computer Lab offers classes to the children that go to the Centre for remedial and special classes (these children have mild to moderate learning disabilities), to the staff and also to external children who want to take Computer Classes as an extra curricular activity. The external classes are offered to any child between 9 and 14 years old at a reasonable cost.
The classes offered at the Centre are based on the Jamaican curriculum, but they have several extra hands-on exercises and fun projects.
During the opening event the Centre had the chance to showcase demos and presentations on the activities and classes in the Computer Lab. Some of the demos included Classroom Projects like "Digital Scavenger Hunt", "Create your own Story", "Clay Animation", etc. Two of the presentations were about the "Use of Technology in the Classroom", and "Music and Computers".
The goal of the Computer Lab is to allow all children to use computers as a learning tool and to offer them a chance to see and try for themselves the interaction between technology and multimedia. Text, sound, photos, graphics and video are an important part of the classes offered in the Lab, because they believe that learning should be exciting and fun, and they try to do this through meaningful and appropriate use of technology and computers.
