Digicel promises more expansion in 2005 PDF Print E-mail

Digicel which became the island's largest cellular service provider shortly after entering the market in 2001, says it plans to grab even more market share next year, not only in Jamaica but in the other six Caribbean territories in which it operates.

Digicel has some 1.1 million cellular customers in Jamaica, more than the combined base of two other providers - Cable & Wireless and Centennial combined.  The American company, Cingular is also now building a network in Jamaica, starting in the western end of the island where most US tourists stay when they visit the island.

In a press statement yesterday, Digicel in part attributed its fast-pace grow what is described as its innovations in the region's markets.

For example, it recently began to offer rollover minutes and pre-paid roaming to the UK.  The new offers are combined with a series of holiday promotions that range from a free music concert series to a collection of gifts with every new phone purchase.

Digicel operates in St Lucia, Grenada, Aruba, St Vincent/Grenadines, Barbados and The Cayman Islands.  The company is the largest GSM mobile provider in the region.  The service in Barbados and Cayman were launched this year.

"Digicel is poised for continued success in the new year, with plans to expand our footprint in the region and launch valuable, new communications services for our customers," said Raoul Fontanez, CEO, Digicel Group.
