C&WJ foundation subsidises 458 computers for three institutions PDF Print E-mail

The Cable & Wireless Jamaica Foundation on Tuesday presented 458 computers to three different institutions which it acquired on their behalf at a subsidised cost to help broaden their information technology programmes and widen Internet access.

The computers were shared 398 to the Joint Board of Teacher Education; 50 to Campion College; and 10 to the Scouts Association of Jamaica.  They were acquired at a cost of US$179,536 ($11-m) or US$392 per computer.  The C&WJ Foundation sold the computers to the Joint Board of Teacher Education and Campion College at US$300 (approx $18,570) each, absorbing the remaining US$92 per computer.

But the 10 that went to the scouts were donated free of cost for the association to establish a C&W cyber club for some 1,900 boys and more than 100 team leaders.  Overall, the subsidy amounted to $3 million, the telecoms foundation said.

"We see this initiative as merely another of our efforts aimed at bringing the benefits of the information age closer to all Jamaicans, especially the young," said Jacqueline Holding, C&WJ president, as she made the presentations.

Camille Facey, deputy chairman of the C&WJ Foundation, said the computers were acquired through a facility available only to member companies of the Caribbean Association of National Telecommunications Organisation.

The initiative required negotiations with the Inter-American Agency for Co-operation and Development, through which the computers were shipped to Jamaica.
