The fastest growing Caribbean mobile provider is celebrating its first anniversary on the island of Grenada this week. With its headquarters in Kingston, Jamaica, Digicel now has approximately 900 employees across the region.

"We transformed the face of mobile telecommunications here," said Digicel Eastern Caribbean chief executive officer Kevin White. The company hosted a party in St George's, on Monday night for it's Grenada staff to mark the occasion.

The largest GSM mobile operator in the region, Digicel has operations in Aruba, Barbados, the Cayman Islands, Grenada, Jamaica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

STIFF COMPETITION

Trading as Digicel, Irish owned Mossel (Jamaica) Limited started operations in Jamaica in 2001 in competition with Cable & Wireless Jamaica, previously the monopoly service provider. Digicel has since pushed its operations out into the wider Caribbean against stiff competition from Cable & Wireless.

Digicel is looking to take on markets in Trinidad & Tobago and the Turks & Caicos Islands, Digicel's chief executive officer, Seamus Lynch said in an earlier interview.
