Oceanic Digital Jamaica Limited, one of the island's cellular service providers, is aiming to take a bite out of the competition with its new Mi topup service.
Officially launched on July 18, the Mi topup service allows owners of the company's miphone mobile phones, to add value to their prepaid accounts using their Visa or Mastercard.
By dialling75 from a MiPhone, a series of instructions will offer the new credit card recharge service. The customer will be required to enter his or her phone number, credit card information and personal access number. When this is complete, the value that the customer wishes to add to his or her account must then be selected. Any value between $200 and $5,000 may be chosen.
The amount is then deducted from the credit card and the value immediately added to the customer's prepaid account. Within 60 seconds, a text message will be received, declaring the success of the transaction.
Kimona Hutchinson, a MiPhone customer, said she loves the new system. "It's really very convenient, especially late at night when you're at home and run out of credit. Now you can just use your credit card and do it (add value) right at home."
A representative of Oceanic Digital said the Mi topup service has received high praises from customers. She said they have received numerous phone calls from customers saying they had been waiting on something like this for a while. Speaking specifically to the impact she thinks the new system will have on the competition, the representative said she anticipates the creation of a greater market share for Oceanic Digital.
