The computer literacy programme for young students of Great Pond Basic School in Ocho Rios received an early fillip recently with the donation of three computers, the first batch for a new computer lab, courtesy of Good Samaritans Doris and Derrick Harrison, many time repeat guests at Sandals Ocho Rios.
At the handing over ceremony at the school, the resort's public relations manager Ian Spencer said the computers would be used in a lab, where students will be instructed in their use by teachers and also staff from the hotel.
The computers were a gift from the McIntosh users group in Orlando Florida, and sourced at the request of the resort's hotel manager Clive Miller.
The Harrisons, who have been vacationing at the resort for many years, said they were fiends of Jamaica and on hearing of the efforts of the resort to start the computer lab, sought assistance from McIntosh user group in Orlando who helped with the donations.
"We are aware that the youngsters are coving away from typewriters and into the computer age. This is just our small way of playing a part in their education," Mr. Harrison noted.
The Harrisons also got a chance to tour the school, which is adopted by the hotel, and give students a short computer lesson.
School principal McBailey, said the computers will go a far with the children's educational programme and welcomed the idea of the computer laboratory.
General manager Michael Darby who was on hand for the donation, pledged the further assistance by his company to improve conditions at the school.
Next project, according to Mr. Spencer, will be the painting of the entire school building on Labour Day along with repairs to the roof, and upgrading of playing equipment in the school year.
The resort also recently replaced the kitchen sink and is involved in a reading programme with the students.
