Jamaicans will soon be able to pay income tax, drivers licence fees and other statutory obligations via the Internet, according to technology minister, Phillip Paulwell.

Paulwell told members of the Rotary Club of Kingston that most government agencies including the Registrar of Companies now had their own websites.

The minister made the remarks as he addressed the launch of the club's $2 million project to provide the Elletson Primary and Infant School with a fully equipped computer lab and industrial printer at the school's compound, downtown Kingston.

The facility is expected to benefit some 800 students, while the printer should generate some $1 million in annual revenue.

Paulwell said that in rural schools that were equipped with computers, attendance on Fridays was no longer dropping dramatically.

"In those schools where Friday is computer day, it is most miraculous, with almost full attendance in all schools throughout Jamaica." The minister added that those schools with computers had a major increase in reading skills.

The minister called for greater resources to be spent on information technology and science training.

"We have to look not only at pure, but applied sciences, and look at training for entrepreneurship within our schools."
