The just concluded Open Source and Linux conference put on by the Jamaica Linux Users' Group at the PCJ's auditorium was by all indications a success. The event started a few minutes after 9:00am with JaLUG's President, Donavon Campbell, offering the welcome to the approximately 90 persons present. This number grew to over 110 by the time the day's proceedings were half way through.
Ms. Suzann Dodd gave the keynote address on behalf of Min. Paulwell who was unable to attend. IBM's Fred Pycko then made two presentations on "key open source decisions for CEOs, CFOs, CTOs/CIOs" and "non-disruptive open source migration" which was followed by a short break during which participants and presenters had a chance to mingle.
After the break, JaLUG's Vice-President, David Bain, gave a presentation on open source Content Management Systems (CMSs) followed by IBM's Douglas Williamson's presentation on a case study of the Ministry of Commerce Science and Technology's adoption of a Lotus Domino and Linux solution. David Bain closed off the round of presentations with a practical demonstration of common applications in a Linux environment.
Overall the day went smoothly with many informative presentations and adequate question and answer opportunities for the participants. This event has definitely fulfilled the plans of the organization's executives by using it as the launching board for a series of public open source & Linux events across the island. |
