The art of an Internet search PDF Print E-mail

Over the years search engines have become 'brighter'. Google has so improved itself that whatever it is, one can simply enter it without much consideration.

For example, I recall a statement made by three African leaders that 'homosexuality was not African.' I entered that phrase into google.com and got the precise statement which was carried by the BBC about two years ago.

I was asked about the virus, 'Bugbear' and entered that in google and got a report less than twelve hours old.

Anyone who says they can't find what they want on the Internet, doesn't know how to look.

Just about everyone maintains a web page; from Encyclopedia Britannica, to NASA to our local Consumer Affairs Commission.

What I usually do is enter the name in my browser. I guess. I figure if I want to know about diabetes I'll type www.diabetes.org, as there would be an organisation, not a commercial site. If it's a governmental agency I'll type .gov at the end, then add the countries call letters.

I guess. I know there are two letters for the country. I will try ca for Canada, and be right. If I try .ja for Jamaica I'll get Japan so then try .jm, and here I am.

There are no spaces in a name. It is not www.White House.gov it is www.whitehouse.gov (if you type .com you'll reach a porno site).

In fact, many porno sites have adopted names which are slips of the finger.

Always remember governmental sites do not have .com, but .gov. So mct.gov.jm not mct.com.jm. (The Ministry of Commerce and Technology site).

Don't be afraid to travel around the Internet. There is so much there you can learn.
