Building on a 10-year presence in the Jamaican and Caribbean markets, Avaya Intelligent Communications is on the verge of ramping up business in the region.

The company said it would work with its two Jamaican partners, Illuminat Jamaica Limited, a Neal and Massy company, and Cable and Wireless Jamaica Limited (C&WJ), to build up its business here.

"We grew this region in the last two years by double digits," Avaya's managing director, Carlos Triviñio said, without divulging the company's market share.

"We need to penetrate more local accounts and we will work very strong and hard with this strategy," he told Wednesday Business.

Already, the company is working with C&WJ on a project to build out a new telecommunications system for Scotiabank Jamaica, under which Avaya provides the hardware.

An off-shoot of United States telecom giant AT&T, the telecommunications solutions provider has already set up a regional service team in Puerto Rico, headed by Alejandro Herrera, who is in charge of overseeing the Caribbean operations.

In its Jamaican market, Avaya will work mainly with Illuminat to develop business.

Growth potential

Carol Wongsam, a director of Illuminat, said her company would be identifying the market segment with the most potential for growth and go after it. Avaya provides or sells private branch exchange telephone system (PBX ) to companies.

"We look for enterprise customers," said Wongsam.

"There are some accounts we have, which are global accounts and Avaya will come into. In others, we will identify the opportunities and bring them in."

Illuminat, which is also based in Trinidad, Barbados and Antigua, is already the holder of several big call centre accounts.

The Jamaican subsidiary, for example, has the E-Services Limited accounts in Jamaica and St Lucia, and for National Asset Recovery Services, a United States company.
