CWJ to roll out 3G network |

Cable & Wireless is investing J$2.1 billion (US$30-million) to transform its core mobile network and introduce 3G capabilities to the Greater Kingston, St. Catherine and St. Thomas areas making it the most modern network in Jamaica and the rest of the English-speaking Caribbean.
The company will also be deploying an additional 100 mobile sites, which will make the reach and coverage of the bmobile network comparable to any other network in Jamaica.
Work on the transformation project, which is being undertaken in conjunction with Ericsson, began last month and is expected to be completed by March 2009.
With the infusion of 3G technology, Cable & Wireless Jamaica customers will have access to a plethora of advanced features and enhanced service offerings while the company will be able to achieve greater network efficiency through improved spectral utilization.
3G offers capabilities and features such as:
• Enhanced multimedia (voice, data, video, and remote control) i.e. easy delivery of multimedia content to devices like mobile phones, PDA’s and laptops
• Videoconferencing
• TV streaming
• Ability to send and receive large e-mail messages
• Enhanced web browsing
• Broad bandwidth and high speed up to 14 Mbps
3G also allows for multiple tasks to be carried out simultaneously enabling users to perform concurrent functions such as making a phone call while surfing the Internet or downloading an MP3 file.
Customers will also have a wide range of 3G devices to choose from as there are currently more than 600 High Speed Packet Access* enabled devices available globally from over 100 suppliers including mobile handsets, PC cards and USB modems.
