Page 1 of 2 So I was here learning the various components of this system and finally got my connectivity issues worked out (most of them anyway). Then I was surprised by the YaST Online Update feature. This is something that has cemented in my head that SuSE developers were thinking about two things when they decided to compile this distro:
1. Business-end practicality 2. End-users
This is the same business model that made the Microsoft Windows platform the defacto desktop platform. While cross-referencing a checklist of items that my managers wanted in a cheaper desktop solution, one of the requirements was automatic end-user support. Now I did not expect to have this as a feature to be checked off as we were seriously looking at Red Hat (thank God we didn't actually go down that road...) and to my pleasant surprise, SuSE 9.0 has this feature.
I got the distro to talk to my ADSL line and subsequently my network (via Samba). When I did all of the necessary internet connectivity configurations, I was surprised to see an icon in the lower right hand corner of the screen that was lit up. When I checked it out, I discovered the dialog box you see attached. This brought chills to my spine because it highlighted several things:
1. SuSE developers are true software engineers. 2. They realise that there is no such thing as perfect software. 3. They have enough respect for the Windows fraternity's history to actually employ such a feature.
