Over the past few months you may have either heard the term “bluejacking” or have been a victim to this hilarious prank. So what is bluejacking?
Firstly, you should understand what Bluetooth is. More recently devices have had Bluetooth integrated in mobile phones, PC handhelds and laptops. Being a wireless technology, Bluetooth otherwise referred to as BT, allows devices to communicate without having to do any special configurations.
Bluetooth devices are able to communicate within a wireless range of up to 10 meters. This allows you to send pictures, sound, phonebook contacts and more. So we are made to understand that Bluetooth is easy to use, now let’s go bluejacking. There are two elements to a bluejack, the bluejacker and the victim, each individual already owning a bluetooth enabled device.
How do you find your victim? All bluetooth enabled devices are set to be discovered by default by the manufactures, this allows the device to be discovered by a bluejacker. Once discovered, a bluejacker will then create a phonebook entry “You’ve been bluejacked!” and if you want to be elaborate even take a picture of the victim, assuming that you know who it is. Then send your message to the discovered device.
On their device, for this case say it’s a mobile phone, a message will appear saying “You’ve been bluejacked has been received by bluetooth” or something along those lines. Most victims will have no idea how the message appeared on their phones. So personalized messages, like “Pass the ketchup, will prompt a startled expression from your victim.
You can later reveal yourself, but that’s up to you.
