Motor Vehicle importers can now expect a hassle-free process when applying for licences, as the Trade Board has, as of June 1, implemented a paperless licensing system where applicants can now apply online.

This system is being imple-mented in two modules - the import module (for import licences) and the export licences and certificates of origin, integrating the Jamaica Customs system.

"Now you don't have to join any line in waiting for your documents to be processed.  Those are things of the past.  This system revolutionises the way motor vehicle importers interact withthe Trade Board," said Phillip Paulwell, Minister of Indus-try, Technology, Energy and Commerce.

Speaking last week during a press conference held at the Trade Board offices, St. Andrew, Mr. Paulwell noted that this new system is geared towards providing clients with a greater level of efficiency, as they now have 24-hour online access to motor vehicle and import licensing services.

The import module of the Trade Board Information System allows clients to apply and pay for import licences online from any computer with Internet access, at any time of the day.

Mr. Paulwell said this new system should not affect staffing at the Trade Board, as employees will be shifted to other areas.

The Trade Board processes about 20,000 import licences each year, with more than 90 per cent from motor vehicle dealers.

How will the new paperless system work?

Apply and pay for import licences online atwww.tradeboard-gov.jm at any time.

Make note of reference/permit number.

Once approval is communicated via email or text message, the client inputs the permit number or respective import entry.

Within 15 minutes of approval, the client can effect usual custom procedures.
