I write in regard to an article published on the TechJamaica.com website on September 19 and a subsequent story carried by that site on September 28, entitled "C&W Invests in Next-Generation Services for Corporate Customers" in which Cable & Wireless Jamaica claims to be the first company to build a Multiple Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) network in the Caribbean.
As CEO of Island Networks Ltd, the company that holds that distinction, I wish to clarify the inaccuracy of this report.
Island Networks launched the first MPLS network in Jamaica and the Caribbean in April of 2004. Since then we have steadily deployed our network, which currently provides coverage of over 90% of Jamaica's main business hubs.
We have in the process earned the confidence of Jamaica's top multi location businesses, including most financial institutions, which are now our satisfied customers.
We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate C&W on their achievement but at the same time, it is extremely important that C&W does not make inaccurate statements such as those made by Chris Hetherington, CEO of Cable & Wireless America's and Caribbean, that they are the first company to launch a comprehensive MPLS network in the Caribbean.
Cable and Wireless further claims that "that they are the only company in Jamaica to offer an island-wide solution with the cost-savings, performance, and reliability provided by the MPLS network!"
We can only conclude that this claim by Cable & Wireless was either a deliberate misrepresentation or an honest mistake, since the story of our MPLS network was carried by TechJamaica.com and by the Sunday Gleaner on April 16, 2006 and stated on our website (www.islandnetjm.com) since late 2005.
At Island Networks, we consider ourselves "quiet achievers" however in instances where such erroneous claims are being made, we believe it's within the interest of all, to set the record straight.
Yours truly,
Andrew Massias CEO Island Networks Ltd. |
