Jamaican businesses now have a very convenient flexible and cost-effective way to continually upgrade `the skills of their work force with the commercial launch of Cable & Wireless Jamaica's eLearning training solutions.
The computer-based training solution allows companies to offer their employees a variety of courses online that can be completed at the employees' convenience, and provides access to an almost limitless data base of training materials from any location where there is a computer with high speed Internet service.
An early adapter to this technological trend, CWJ has been utilizing eLearning for its internal training and human resource development programmes since 2001. The Company currently offers its staff more than 1,200 courses in areas including Information Technology, Business Development, Finance and Project Management. The facility has allowed a significant number of employees throughout the Company to upgrade their skills and expand their knowledge, studying at the times that are most convenient to them.
Arthur Phidd, Regional Vice President & Chief Information Officer, Cable & Wireless Caribbean said that having benefited tremendously from its own internal eLearning programme, the Company thought that it was important to make the service available to other organizations so that they too could benefit.
"Globally, a lot of HR executives are now using e-learning because it's a viable option for increasing knowledge sharing and productivity while reducing training expenses. Companies have been saving money because they no longer have to pay to hold physical seminars and training sessions," he explained.
Citing the European Amplifon Group as an example, Mr. Phidd said that that Company saved €70,000 in travel-related training expenses in the first two months after implementing its eLearning programme.
"That is one of the major reasons why we expect our eLearning service to go over well with local companies -- it allows you to reduce your operational costs and improve your productivity," he said.
The CIO also said he was particularly excited about the courses that allow candidates to prepare for certification by external bodies. "Of course Cable & Wireless is not an accredited learning institution but we offer certification prep courses that will get students ready to take various certification exams. This means that in the future we will have a lot more certified professionals in our workforce which will put us in a better position to attract international investments," Mr. Phidd said.
Elearning is fast becoming the methodology of choice for international companies seeking to ensure that their employees remain on the cutting edge of industry developments. International market research consultants, the Gartner Group reports that more than 66% of the top 1000 Global enterprises are now utilising elearning as part of their employee training strategy. With growing demand for these services experts predict that the elearning market, currently worth US $23 billion annually will grow at an annual compound rate of 150%. |
