Senator Colin Campbell, Minister of Information and Development, said on Monday that the Electronic Transaction Bill has received the go ahead from Cabinet.

The Information Minister, who was speaking at the weekly post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House, said the legislation would facilitate the promotion and development of the legal and business infrastructure necessary to implement secure electronic commerce.

Mr. Campbell said the bill would also eliminate barriers to electronic commerce which result from uncertainties such as overwriting and signature requirements. He said it is expected that the legislation would also promote public confidence in the integrity and reliability of electronic communication and transaction, especially through the use of electronic signatures.

Reliable electronic communications

"It will also provide for uniformity of legal rules and standards regarding the authentication and integrity of electronic communication, and finally, for the electronic filing of information with Government agencies and statutory corporations and promote efficient delivery of Government services by means of reliable electronic communications," the Information Minister said.
