“NCB once again continues to be a pioneer in our efforts to provide an environment conducive to the development of our employees. We do so because we recognize that so much of the success of our business is ultimately due to the success of our people,” stressed Patrick Hylton, NCB Group Managing Director, speaking at the recent NCB eCampus launch held at the bank’s head office.
Through its Training and Human Resources Division, National Commercial Bank has established NCB eCampus, an online virtual learning facility. This initiative is designed to empower and encourage employees to take responsibility for their own learning and development. “NCB’s goal is to be the dominant provider of financial solutions in Jamaica and the region. This goal is achievable if our people are given the opportunity to optimize their potential,” Mr. Hylton highlighted.
In an effort to create a more holistic approach to learning, NCB eCampus encompasses four elements; eBooks, eLearning, eLab and eLibrary. An eBook is an electronic version of a traditional printed book, which can be read by using a computer or an eBook reader. With eLearning, a virtual classroom is created to deliver learning content through the internet, intranet, WAN, LAN, satellite, interactive TV, CD ROM, as well as Video or Audio Tape. This channel provides an electronic alternative that can supplement the traditional classroom setting. A simulated one-on-one learning experience is also possible through the eLab. This is a simulated movie supported by audio, which captures screen shots of activity on a computer and display the screens and activity in a near real-time environment.
The fourth component is the eLibrary service. This feature allows employees to have fingertip access to a database of over 230,000 books, journals, magazines, and newspapers among other periodicals. This facility serves as reservoir of knowledge that will enhance research through a user-friendly platform. NCB employees will be able to conveniently access this database from their homes. “NCB without question plays a major role in our financial sector and it is my bank of first choice. I’m sure that this virtual learning system will be of great benefit as NCB seeks to further empower the NCB Team and engage in a more meaningful way, the process of life long learning,” the honourable Phillip Paulwell, Minister of Commerce, Science & Technology with Energy highlighted during his address at the launch.
NCB eCampus endeavours to create a virtual learning community where employees can learn and exchange knowledge. NCB is focused on its drive to remain on the cutting edge of technological development. “We are committed to utilizing technology both in our business model and to facilitate the development of our people,” expressed Mr. Hylton.
“Recognizing that we operate in a very cost conscious and dynamic environment and in keeping with NCB’s objective to run our business effectively, we have to identify effective and efficient ways to execute our learning and development strategies. The virtual learning environment facilitated by NCB eCampus is a most effective approach that results in major cost savings for the bank”, outlined Mr. Allen.
The administrators of NCB eCampus will also offer tests and certification to ensure the quality of the skills garnered by employees. This initiative is expected to augment the knowledge capital of NCB employees and encourage the exploration of higher learning opportunities. Additionally, this facility offers a platform for research and product development. “With eCampus, NCB seeks to give each of our employees the tools and resources to achieve their personal best,” outlined Mr. Hylton.
