Jamaican and other Caribbean producers are being offered an opportunity to increase their chances of grabbing a share of the business opportunities expected from staging of the Cricket World Cup 2007.

Cable and Wireless (C&WJ) is to be the lead sponsor locally for a JAMPRO-coordinated private sector initiative designed to optimise the benefits for the producers.

The initiative, billed the Caribbean Business Opportunity Service (CBOS) is designed to bring together suppliers of services in a wide range of industries with organisers and potential users of these services locally and overseas.  The sponsorship agreement was signed yesterday at the Terra Nova Hotel between Cable and Wireless, Jampro and several private sector bodies.

CBOS will have as its centre piece a web-based portal providing easy reference to information on service providers in industries such as construction and venue development; entertainment, sports and recreation, hospitality, transportation, food and beverage and tourism, among others.

LONG-TERM BENEFITS

President and Chief Executive officer of C&WJ, Rodney Davis, who signed on behalf of the company, said the CBOS initiative was an exciting prospect for Cable and Wireless as it was in keeping with the company's vision and commitment to being a leader in facilitating national development in a number of arenas.

He welcomed the partnership between government agencies, local organisers and the private sector, noting that this would be crucial if the country was to benefit in the long term, beyond the close of the tournament.
