We will not be bullied says Digicel PDF Print E-mail

David Hall, chief executive officer of mobile telecommunications provider Digicel, says he is surprised that Cable & Wireless will be taking legal action in response to a Digicel advertisement published over the weekend.

The advertisement was published in response to complaints from Digicel customers about persistent sales calls, according to Digicel.

"We regret that Cable & Wireless do not appreciate the importance of directly addressing valid concerns of customers in an immediate and effective manner, but we will not be bullied into silence when our customers are expressing discomfort and querying whether we had betrayed their confidentiality by publicising their phone numbers," said Mr. Hall.  He observed that Digicel would not have commented on the issue, if the level of complaints from its customers had not reached an alarming level.

LARGE MARKET SHARE

"At Digicel Jamaica our customer numbers exceed 1.3 million people - that's over 50 per cent of the population of this island.  It was imperative that we proactively reach out to the people of Jamaica and assure them that we have not jeopardised their trust in any way.  As the country's leading mobile telephone provider, Digicel has every legitimate right to let our valued customers know that we have not breached our obligations to them."

Mr. Hall said the company customer care agent and management received numerous calls from its customers complaining that they had unsolicited calls from other mobile companies, and the customers queried whether Digicel had shared their numbers with other parties.

"As our customers know first hand, Digicel has always put customer care and service first and it is in this spirit that we issued the statement on October 30," said Mr. Hall.
