Shortly after 6:00 one morning I am awakened by the text message alert on my cellphone.  I check.  'Rastafari Astor Black for President of the Republic Jamaica,' the message reads.  Later, Black, head of the Jamaica Alliance Movement, a political party that has been contesting the polls for years without success, confirms that the message came from him.

IVA Communications, a group of investors with Jamaican connections, is rolling out a new form of telecommunication in local hotels, called iWire, which enables broadband access over electrical wiring.

At least one telecommunications firm is threatening legal action against the Government if it is not granted a $50 million three-month waiver during which it will not pay any monies into the Universal Access Fund (UAF).

Cable & Wireless Jamaica (CWJ) will this morning roll out a new service that allows customers to make calls from any landline, mobile or payphone in Jamaica, the US, Canada, the UK and several Caribbean countries and have the cost automatically charged back to their Homefone account.
